New to the site.. have spent a bit of time in the last week doing searches on the WWW and also this site regarding bypassing the factory Amplifier with no solid successful answer...

I just purchased a 98 Landcruiser from Texas on Wed this week and drove it back to Minnesota. The factory amplifier was missing, so instead of tracking one down or spending the $220 for one online I am upgrading the HU instead possibly with an Alpine 3200BT that plays DVD etc.. might even step into the Navigation one too, but the main issue is no amp..

I am reading around that bypassing the factory amp is better with an after market head unit, but that leads to the issue.. HOW? is there a place that sells a jumper harness for that particular thing.. I am not finding a clear answer, and after spending a couple of hours in the back seat trying to jumper wires to see if I could get the factory radio to turn on I gave up...

any help would be great...

I am an Aussie that has desired the LC's forever... I like Tahoes but they dont compare to the comfort and build quality so much to my wife's displeasure I bought an LC ;). I also sold my Subaru Forester XT for this thing and so far I havent missed my Forester (except maybe for the MPG) haha

Looking forward to learning more about my new truck and being a part of what looks to be a great forum

Go to Crutchfield.com

If you put a stereo in your cart and go to check out, they will give you two harness options. One to use the factory amp, and one to bypass.

I've tried to link this before and it didn't work, but you should find it if you follow the above steps.

Hope it helps!

purchased the head unit tonight.. so nothing so far.. btu someone just posted in another thread the part I have been searching for...

Product Detail

Sorry... that was me in the other thread that gave you that link. I thought this thread was older (I have been doing a lot of research on the Stereo right now. I just looked at Crutchfield to check if that harness works on the '98 model. I cant find it for the '98. I found it when looking for mine which is a '00. You might want to give Crutchfield support a call and see if the jumper harness is required on your rig.....

Does your radio currently work without the amp? If so... you may not need anything....

thats fine... it looks exactly like what I need... I counted the pins etc... no the radio wont work without the amp... so I purchased that cable last night.. its worth a shot.. thanks..

well with the help of a few mates I got it all installed...

the cable they send out plugs in perfectly... the speaker wires all correspond but the other 4 wires that come with are USELESS.. they dont go to any power source etc... you have to find the other 3 wires needed (power constant, power switched & ground) out of the 2nd harness that provides power to the amplifier then from there to the head unit...

so we had to pop 3 of the wires out and place2 of them in different spots in that harness then place the 3rd into the 2nd harness as a jumper to get constant power I believe...

all in all was really straight forward...

oh and the harness that came with the pioneer didnt suit the factory clip... FYI

For Copenhagen1 and anyone else interested...

just adding some pictures to show the fitment and wiring... (98 LC)

Dash Fitment.jpg

Amplifier Bypass.jpg
amplifier bypass harness.. the white wire had to be removed form the harness I purchased and tapped into a power source on the other harness..

Rear Camera.jpg
rear camera installed (there will be another pic with the hole cutting).. it ended up being about 1/2 in too high as it catches the upper door along the top of the HU screen but actually thats where the warning writing is so it is kinda ok... I will be machining another adapter to angle the camera some more so I can see the tow ball / trailer for backing up

Console.jpg
little cup-holder adapter I made quick as I was tired of my coffee cup falling over around corners.. not everyone orders those HUGE McDonalds cups haha

you are welcome.. hope it helps a little... the biggest fun you will have is the wiring for power sources etc... when I could NOT find ANY power at the factory radio harness in the dash I gave up as I was stumped.. haha (not a wiring fan)
