SANTA FE, NM – May 1, 2022 – The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) has updated the closure order to protect public health and safety during fire operations on the Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak Fire. The entire Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District is closed to the public. The order is effective from now until Dec. 31, 2022, unless rescinded earlier.

5/1 3pm MDT | Several looks at #GOESEast infrared, fire temperature RGB, and visible satellite are suggesting a likely new fire start in the San Mateo Mtns east of the @TheNRAO Very Large Array in western Socorro County.

This is getting nuts.

5.1.2022 – 1240 hours: UPDATE - There is an evacuation order in effect for residents that live near the Valles Caldera. New Mexico Highway 4 is closed from mile marker 27 through mile marker 50.

San Mateo Mtn fire is now the Bear Trap Fire. It's located just east of the Hughes Mill campground.

Something close to home:

"The Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District Office (BLM) is preparing the Gila Lower Box
Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP) along with an Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate
proposed areas for the development of recreation resources. The EA will analyze the effects of these actions
on wildlife habitat, rangeland health, soils, hydrology, and other resources. The BLM is asking for your help
in identifying issues and concerns that you may have regarding the proposed plan and environmental
analysis. We will use your comments to assist in developing the proposed action and possible alternatives."

What they need to do is quit letting the idiot feds start fires.

It was the feds that burnt down Los Alamos doing a controlled burn!! I guess that was so long ago they figured it is time to burn down another town.

Santa Fe and Carson National Forests are now closed. "The Cibola National Forest will also be implementing a Stage 3 forest closure for the Mt. Taylor, Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts."

Thanks for posting this sad but necessary announcement. All of these fires are probably human caused, either through prescribed burns ( a bad idea in New Mexico in the dry, windy spring time), or by people who were not thinking when they were using fire in very dry conditions.
Can't blame dry lightning, as there hasn't even been a cloud in the sky over these areas, prior to these fires starting.
Hoping for rains.

More update:

Santa Fe, Carson, and Cibola National Forests to change closure end-date to July 18

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, May 18, 2022 — To better provide for public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions in parts of New Mexico, beginning 8 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2022, the Santa Fe and Carson national forests will implement forest-wide closure orders, and the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands will implement a closure order for the Sandia, Mt. Taylor, and Mountainair ranger districts. The closures will remain in effect until July 18, 2022, unless rescinded earlier based on conditions. This date replaces the termination date indicated in an initial release yesterday, which was December 31, 2022. The new closure date reflects a timeframe closer to potential monsoon weather, and the closures will be revaluated at that time.
