This is an update from the Crater Lake Property Thread. This was March 19-22nd.
Headed to the CL property Friday. Beautiful drive with our typical rest stop along the Deschutes River.

Picked up plywood in Bend at the Bend Builders Outlet. The owner Danny is a bit of a Nazi. I preordered and prepaid as plywood has been moving fast even at $31 a sheet for 1/2” mill cert CDX. The forklift with while delivering or their in the yard damaged about half of my sheets. I told him I’d like other sheets and he said, “there’s no cherry picking allowed.” You get what you get. After much discussion he said he’d wave any 20% restocking charge and allow me to get replacement plywood. Travis was also getting plywood and #3 lumber. While the forklift was putting wood on my trailer we saw 2 rough bad boards. We told him we didn’t want them and again the owner came over and said Travis had to take them, “no cherry picking allowed.” We both bought over a couple grand in lumber and couldn’t understand why the owner was a complete toolbag.
Got to the property and started on my pumphouse for the well lot while Travis’s lot had too much snow to get the truck to his. Thankfully Walter was able to come over with his tractor and clear the snow.

The bathroom pad was covered with snow still and had a thick layer of ice under the snow. Before I left Friday decided to clear the pad in case I had time to start that building.

Saturday was a great work day. Got the door wall knocked in and started placing the 4x6 beams.

Today hope to finish sheeting it in before the snow comes.
Finished sheeting the pumphouse and covered the roof. Need to order a door.
For now just enclosed the rest of the lumber inside.

Looking good man!
Decided it was time to jump and purchase a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill with diesel motor. I’ve got Doug Fir timber on my property at home and Lodgepole Pine at the Crater Lake property.

I have a very big fir at the house that’s been stressed from the dry summers and will be taking it down if it’s health continues to go down. It’s got enough lumber to build a house. Decided to go with the wide 36” model due to the fact that many of my fir trees here at home are too big for a standard lumber mill. Anything over 32” needs to be transported to Siuslaw at the coast to mill that can handle big trees. The wide Woodizer mill will take care of that. Also decided to add the trailer so I can take it to both properties and to side jobs and make lumber for people. I’m in line with the down payment but am out 36 weeks. It will put off some projects I had planned but I

LT15WIDE Portable Sawmill

Wide cut LT15 series sawmill with 25HP gas, 17HP diesel, or 10HP electric power, 36 inch log diameter, 35-1/2 inch width of cut, 17 foot 8 inch log length, optional saw head power feed, optional bed extensions, and optional GO trailer for a wide cut portable sawmill with LT15 sawmill versatility.

Talked to a traveling lumber grader who will stamp your lumber for $450. This will allow me use my own lumber for my cabin when I pull the building permit.

Oh man I dream about having one of these.

It’s portable so let me know if you need milled lumber. I’ll be able to tow it with the 60. Should have it by December. Sales on these are through the roof right now with lumber prices!
If your interested in camping out and want to help frame up my bathroom building PM me and we will get this planned. I’d like to have @boots4 join in on the trip. A bathroom at the property will be a great addition.

We're seeing 2X+ prices and very little flexibility from yard staff. Sucks, considering how much of what we're sold is one step above firewood. I've got a 2x4 here that would make for a very nice longbow lol.

@Hojack, after milling do you need to take it to a kiln to dry the wood or what?

Stack and air dry with stickers across each row of lumber works just fine.
You better not be putting my walnut in the kiln....

Most of the wood framing on houses/commercial here in Oregon is green doug fir, some times it's so wet it splashes!
Usually the box stores sell kiln dried Hemlock fir. I've found that the bugs liked the home milled wood better than commercial doug fir lumber- I think that it didn't get milled fast enough- cut it and mill it, don't let the logs sit around, just my observation..

I know that some of the tree farms are planting GMO trees that grow extremely fast and are insect resistant. Southern GA is covered in these “paper tree” farms. The 2x4s that come from those farms are often weak and twisted because it’s all soft summer growth so a lot of them become toilet paper.

Family went camping at Silver Falls State Park. I had to work but ended up going Saturday to spend the weekend. The State Park hosts about a dozen awesome waterfalls. It also has many hiking, biking and horse trails which is why it’s a great family spot. It’s about an hour drive from home.

Silver falls is definitely a hidden gem. I remember it being surprising that all those falls are there when on the drive out it seems more like flat land. Awesome hiking.

Got an early start and left home at 4:09am to take Snowball❄️ and Reload down to the property to start construction on the bathroom structure. An absolutely amazing sunrise in central Oregon.
Mt. Jefferson 10,495’ seen in the background right, Three Sisters Peaks to the left.

Made it to the property in just under 4 hours. My only stop was in Gilchrist to get some food and support local business.
A customer of mine got me some Aspen trees to plant on the property.

One wall was quickly up but my pumphouse structure needed some organization.

Haven’t felt rushed today like the time when I built the pumphouse structure in the cold and snow. It’s been way more relaxing and enjoyable with temps in the 70s and a nice breeze.
47F76419-9471-49A3-8B30-77844CBA6993.jpeg

Really needed to organize the pumphouse materials as the rest of the 2x4x8 were under metal roofing panels and both doors.
F9E6833E-9281-42DC-A3FB-D35F0B0DA7DF.jpeg

Built a shelf to get the metal panels out of the way and was able to get the doors up right. The green Doug fir was still damp as the bottom door had a bit of condensation. The mild weather and wind outta help dry everything out.

Dog days of summer!!!
Reload and I went on a hike around the property. Had some food and I actually a nap... that never happens🤣

Temps dropped into the mid 20s, the 1/4” of ice in my bucket shows just how cold 🥶 it can still get east of Crater Lake National Park.

Planted 7 of the Aspen trees. These will provide some nice fall color and also break up the monotony of just a pure stand of Lodgepole Pine. Finished burning some slash and racking cleaning up the place after all the excavating. Best project I’ve ever had, but Project Snowball’s❄️ is a close second. Fun projects ahead will be a disc golf course and a mountain bike track.

funny how our world works. i live in the land of aspens. it’s almost all i have around me. a few years ago i planted lodge pole pines to break up the monotony!!

it’s a beautiful piece of land you have. i’ve only been to crater lake once but it blew me away.
