It quickly became apparent that we could not just chop up the factory Y, we were going to need a bunch of bends. So we got a box of ‘em and started trying to figure it out…

The more we looked at it, the less it looked like it was going to work. While it was physically possible, the routing didn’t lend itself to any clean lines.

We were going to run the tailpipe out side the frame rail like an 80 series and then cut back in.

We would have to punch a hole through the first body mount to keep it tight, tho

And there wasn’t a good place to turn back in without either cutting up the pristine cab and bed sheet metal or having a tailpipe exposed in the wheel well…

Side pipe out the fender?

The more we looked at it, the more it looked like we weren’t going to be able to hide it very well if we went outside the frame rail.

Here’s the routing on an FJ Co. build:

Side pipe out the fender?

I wanted to turn it up through the side of the cowl with a glass pack on the top and a tractor flipper thing but I got voted down.

Yes @wngrog ! #FarmForty No. 1 had an awesome exhaust/muffler layout. In fact, I don’t think No. 2 is running, sometimes you just have to leave things as they are.

I came across some poignant graffiti recently, that said: “But do aliens believe in ME?”

I don’t know what that has to do with what happens next or if I was really even abducted, but I did enter a dimension in which time was not a social construct. How long was I there? No idea.

But when I emerged, I knew what had to be done.

We would take the more difficult path of routing the exhaust under the oil pan and crossing over to the relatively wide open driver side where we could run straight back with very few obstacles.

We pulled out a roll of tape and made a mock driveshaft for clearance and found the right spot for the collector.

After fiddling around both with the truck in the air and on the ground, we weren’t able to see or access things enough to even get started.

I was ready to yank the motor when I remembered that we had a spare 1FZ up on the pallet rack.

We pulled it down & put it on the stand, and swapped the manifolds over…

We rolled it inside, fired up the CAD machine, got out the blue tape & bendy wire, and started making templates…

We scattered the bends out on the floor and started looking for matches

Not pictured is the protractors and slide rule. We wanted to be period correct!

We asked ETAF to show the way and guide our cuts. Before too long, the first tube materialized right before our eyes…
