Does anyone think there would be any value in an adapter for the stock exhaust manifold that would convert the proprietary Toyota manifold to down pipe flange to a more generic - muffler shop common - flange and gasket? I'm thinking an adapter that you would bolt to the manifold connected to a generic flange ready for a generic down pipe and flange/gasket to be attached.

Like this:

Manifold flange >
Toy gasket >
ADAPTER:Toy flange on one side, generic flange on the other >
generic gasket >
generic flange/downpipe

This would not get removed when installing a new exhaust and would therefore avoid the issue of breaking/replacing the studs in the manifold. Only the generic flange would get touched and this could be set-up with through bolts and nuts that could be cut off to remove and then replaced easily.

Any thoughts?

The question becomes, would the investment in the adapter and the cost savings from the "generic" exhaust system be that much of a savings over the TOYOTA specific? If so, what is the cost savings (cost benefit) of one doing this in a real-life application and what type of "generic system are we talking.

(sorry analysis is what I do for a living so I try to see if from all sides)

I sure would have liked to install something like that.

My exhaust is pretty much not removable unless it is cut out. The headers are slipped into a y-pipe that is then welded directly to the rest of the exhaust.

So from the engine: Headers -> slip joint -> y-pipe -> weld -> pipe -> weld -> cat -> weld -> pipe -> weld -> muffler -> weld -> pipe -> weld -> exhaust tip

If I ever want to do maintenance I'd have to somehow get the rusted slip joint apart at two places (two piece header) and then drop the rear axle to get the exhaust off haha

Of course for me the y-pipe doesn't come together until right at the transmission crossmember. Pretty $hitty (dollar sign used because it was expensive). I'd probably have to have two smaller units the size of my header tubes. Enabling me to disconnect it before the transmission crossmember.

That's a long rant....

Ok that with WOYs explanation makes sense. I guess I was under the impression that the system was a bit more "extensible" than that. I can already see the cost benefit now with this and then some "modular" portions in there that would allow for sectional swap out (as pieces corrode, rust, or go bad.

This is good to know as I will need to drop my exhaust next year to fix the J-Pipe piece (hillybilly fix per JimCs doc as of right now and want to replace the manifold gasket as well.

I'm not sure there is a need for a pre-fab adapter. If you're having a shop weld up exhaust piping for you, then they may as well just weld up an adapter using the non-Toyota flange you want to use and a Toyota type, which I believe are available from parts stores for attaching to generic mufflers.

For my money, I think $220 for the Toyota muffler/tailpipe assembly is the way to go. Bolts on, no welding pipe or welding s*** on your frame, and it's quality.
 
I don't think the Toyota flange is available anywhere (other than sor.com)... not at auto parts stores or muffler shops - I DON'T THINK - I could be wrong.

This all comes from my experience a week ago where I was 7 hours away from home and had a manifold flange to pipe separate... a national muffler shop chain would not help me out because the parts were not readily available. I think if they could have bolted up a generic down pipe to my manifold they would have been willing/able to do the job.
 
Also, you may have had better luck at an independent shop. Anymore, big chains won't do anything that's not in the "book." For example, getting tires on an FJ60 at Costco: book says stock tire is H78-15, they don't have H78-15, can't put any tires on truck.
 
Is that Toyota 3 bolt pattern?

Looks like the one on the muffler I have sitting in front of me. I think it's the same flange on the other side of the cat too, but I can't remember if it's the same flange coming off the manifold, which was what you needed, right?

Hmm. I thought I had an exhaust manifold on my parts shelf I could compare, but I just have the intake. I'm sure someone will chime in who knows.
 
How many Toyota flanges do you want? I've made my own in the past from 1/4" plate... I could get them laser cut for around $10 each.
