Problems Timing Injection Pump (1HZ) (1 Viewer)

The woodruff key has a round bottom, like a half-moon. You should be able to support the shaft from below with a piece of brass or something, and a good steel punch to drive down one end of the woodruff key. That would lever the other end up and out, working it loose. Might need to work both sides of the key, but that should get it moving for you.

Swapping out the shaft is a full injection pump rebuild.

I’ve certainly had more fun before. Hopefully I didn’t hurt any of the internals taping on the shaft.

Wow, that was a roller coaster... glad you got it sorted, good advice by GLTHFJ60 - is that how you got it? This time, I’m sure you’ll double check the key is fully in the slot before tightening it down... I doubt you damaged anything - only issue would probably be bearing and you’d be able to feel that.

what I was meaning by injectors is if the pump is fresh and injectors aren’t you can get pre ignition due to the injectors opening early because of worn springs. It’s not apparent with the old pump as they wear together and the old pump isn’t putting out full pressure so you don’t notice it. I’ve had to retard the timing out of spec to reduce injector rattle on one in the past due to this situation. Ran Perfectly after that for many years

I will post up how it works out, Ill get back to it next week. I ordered a new pump gear and bearing to be safe. Haven't messed anything like this up in a long time, guess I was due. :meh:

Been back on the road for about a week. Replaced the injection pump gear and bearing for good measure, along with all the corresponding seals and gaskets. That crankshaft pulley was sure fun to get off.

It was easy to time the pump after the new key and injection pump gear was in place.

Thanks for all the help.

Do you have any of those part numbers saved for everything you just replaced on the IP this time?

Not all of it pertained to the pump, but most of the systems around or ones touched while I was in there.

Have you worked out how the woodruffe key got mangled?

No, I never did. I don't know if it was non genuine key or that I simply missed the "key slot" in the injection pump gear. I was pretty sure it was aligned and I only ever use hand tools to tighten ever thing to spec. Hopefully I won't have to open it up for another 30 years :hmm:

I would have to guess it was a non genuine key. I don't know how you could get it on wrong with the proper key

Speaking of 30 years here I am reading your tech 20 years later… I’m not too far off of ordering and oil burner for myself. Good to see you again LTR

It's good to be back full time

I've always had a cruiser just not as a DD. It's fun to see some of the old members still floating around. What flavor oil burner are you looking at?

HDJ80/1 DD with big adventure dreams. Mild build w 285's, sliders, bumper up front. Tune it a little bit for a little more power. Bout to build or buy an adventure trailer. Almost 50, ready to quit putting up a tent and sleeping on the ground.

What's up, Greg! Left-hand drive HDJ?

Hey dude! The gang's all here. I'm good with left or right. Shopping the available market pretty hard right now, will send Steve a deposit in the next couple of weeks if I don't find the right town before then.

GT, I'll keep my eye out for you here in CenTex.
