Other than being hard to get grease and undercoating out of,,,What is the purpose of these “ears” on front axle?

I believe that is the limiter for the hub. so you don't turn the wheel too hard and your berf blows it guts...

Ahhh. Makes perfect sense. I just didn’t notice it until I had hub off and was cleaning up.
