Priming Pump??

I hope this isn't a "make me look stupid" question, but I recently saw a priming pump for sale on EBAY.

I have a 78 BJ40 and have no idea what this pump does or is for? Should I know about this, or does this pump even exist on my 'B' Diesel?

All diesels have some kind of pump to purge air from the fuel system when the engine is started after a rebuild or when it is run out of fuel.
Some petrol engines even have one

Some have it on the fuel injection pump or built into the filter head(like the new toyotas)

Yours should hang off the side of the filter. You have to unscrew it 1st ,then it pops up a little.

The one on ebay is probably the better quality type judging by its price and its all metal construction

I'm pretty much a newbie however, I have the 3B motor and the priming pump is located below the injector pump.It has a distinctive white pump handle. I will post some pics if u need. Hope this helps.

Not all diesels have them....only good ones to work on do :)

I think the GMs don't have one. You have to crank it to purge.

FWIW you can buy these at injection shops around 20-25 dollars... No need to buy one for 50. or 100 from Toyota.

.

The 1HZ is also cranked to purge but it still has the pump on the filter so you can get the air out between the pump and filter.
Surely the GMs have this?

The 1HZ system works well but you have to remove 3 inj lines and all the glowplugs.
However I ran out of diesel in the 75 just short of a fuel stop the other day.
When it died I switched to the sub tank and it too was empty (forgot I used it offroad last week) so I thought I was fawked.

I put 20 litres in ,pumped the primer without removing the plugs or injector lines and it started after about 20 seconds on the starter:D

Who tells you this, Rosco?????

LOL

Tells me what? You got some kind of a problem?

If you dont like my posts ,dont reply ,now fxxx off.

There are several photos of a priming pump on my fuel filter write up here

Good write up. Only things I would change is the typo where you call it a 2F....LOL

Also when you do the prime you don't have to pump it up and release it like brake. Just open the bleed screw and start pumping till about a litre or more comes out bubble free. Then while the bleeder is draining just tighten it up. Then secure the primer. If the primer is unable to push down and screw tight. Just leave it till the engine is running. Then while running it will very easy be able to be pushed down and secured.

After that if your worried about air just crack each injector nut half a turn while running and bleed off any air there. One at a time.

lol...oopsie

I would have figured it would suck air in if you didn't have it tightened? Good stuff to know..

Oh I would not leave it open if it was not draining. Once you start to pump for a bit it will just continue draining away. Then while it's draining you can just tighten it up. You need to pump quite a bit to get all the air out. It takes many pumps. Your method of building pressure and releasing would work, but would have to be done a bunch of times.......or not.

Hey if it runs nice and so on.........you did it alright :)

The manual says something like if nothing comes out after 20 pumps then the pump is fawked or there is some other problem ie no fuel:D

yah I just use an old coffee can and pump away till it is bubble free and clear. Why does a litre sound like a lot?

You can pour it back in your tank if it looks clean.

Speaking of priming pumps

I reading that the fuel feed pump has a filter inside it. Is this true of all the toy diesel motors (I'm especally interested in the 3B) ? Is everyone cleaning theirs and how much fuel leaks out when u do this maintenance?

Thanks
Newbe Moe

I've never pulled my inlet screen. Will do soon just to see. I would think you will need the gaskets on either side prior to doing this. Otherwise might leak after.

I will be doing the same. My manual reads, inspect and clean every 48000 km or 36 months and install a new gasket.Would u happen to know that part # ? Let us know how u make out.

gasket pn is 94712-77121 need 2. Filter is on the forward side of the pump it shows in the EPC. But I thought the FSM shows it in the back....?
