3b primer pump question

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of swapping engine components from one BJ42 to another (mine is rusty and swaping to a less rusty donor vehicle).. I am swaping bits over because 1) i know the history of the part 2) some of them have been replaced only recently.

I have noticed that on my bj42 (3/84) that there is a bleeder valve on the fuel filter housing, connected to this is a filter/container of some sort that is mounted to the inner fender, from there its connected to the primer pump.

On the donor bj42 (2/84) i notice there there is no bleeder valve on the fuel filter or canister connected to the primer pump.

Can anyone explain 1) what this cansiter is used for 2) if its adventagous to have 3) if its worth unbolting the fuel filter housing and swaping it over to the donor vehicle?

I will source some pics tonight when i get home..

Thanks.

The canister is probably a water trap. Some have them under the floor and some have a filter/water trap combined.

I think the best is to have a separate filter and water trap next to each other like your 3/84
Toyota must think so too because now they are all like that.

Swap em over!;)

thanks rosco! :)

could you see any issues arising with swaping the entire fuel filter housing across or is it more hassle than its worth? I haven't checked to see if there is a bleeder valve on the injector of the 3b without the watertrap or bleeder on the filter..

I cant see any dramas.Have a thorough look at the system and make sure all bases are covered.
Particuarly the fuel return lines from the injectors and where it goes.
Some returns go back to the filter ,some to the tank.

Maybe some of the more knowledgable 3B owners can confirm.

The filter housing on the engine with the bleeder valve is the main fuel filter for the IP. You want the one with the bleeder screw. It helps a lot when changing filters. You pump the primer and crack this open while pumping till no air comes out.

the other canister you are refering to is the water seperator. Also good to have. It should have a drain on the bottom to let out water.

Got the pics yet?

heres a pic of the donor vehicle..

and the one on my blue 40..

you can kind of see where it disappears from leaving the primer pump then comes from the water seperator to the filter..

and of the water seperator..
