I'm trying to acquire this FJ60. How much should I offer?

Mostly stock
160,000 miles
Surface rust
Paint faded, no clear coat
Operational status unknown (I haven't taken a closer look yet). But waterpump replacement is the only problem according to the owner.

Looks like it hasn't been driven in quite awhile. You will have to put a lot of money into it just put it in proper working condition even if is seems to run fine at the moment. Lots of things will start breaking really fast if it hasn't been driven much. I would offer $2,000 based on what you said and the pictures but I don't have the whole picture.

It hasn't been driven since 2010/2011. Can you be more specific? What would likely to break faster?

what does the interior look like?

I don't have a good picture of the interior. But it looks fine, no obvious damage.

I agree with 2$. Since youre in CA, I would also make sure all the appropriate emissions components are all there too, those parts can get pricey and add up to an expensive ordeal to pass smog as im sure you know. Other than that it looks like a solid rig...besides all the black widows living under it :hillbilly: Good luck.

Hmmm, I found that for $1k a couple of years ago. But the 'waterpump' turned into 'cam' and eventually 'new engine' in mine.

I'd want to hear it run for 2k!

(but I'm a stingy bastard)

Start at $1000 if...

-The fluids look okay. i.e. nothing completely dry, they are all gonna need changing

-The interior doesn't smell

-The motor turns over. (pull the spark plugs and turn over by hand or starter)

-That cat does NOT come with

A few of those things are picky, but just looking out for ya :)

Looks fairly complete. All skid plates, mirrors, etc. And it's a 5-speed ready model.

PS- you'll need about 3 gallons of gear oil, 2 gallons anti-freeze, 2 gallons distilled water, and 2 gallons of oil. ;)

I would offer $500 ........... maybe !!! it has rust... too much rust actually for it being a CA vehicle.. is it originally from CA ?

It has not run for a couple of years meaning it needs to go to a smog station.....
Gotta flush that fuel tank, tune up,
AC probably needs to be looked at...
and as stated up above... make sure all emissions parts are there.....
plush hoses belts, that's a few hours of labor under the hood..

That's where I am. I'm not even sure I'd give that for it. You're gonna end up spending a LOT of $$$ and time getting that thing back road-worthy. Every seal will leak. All the brakes components are shot. Rotors and drums will be very rusty.

I bought my first 60 about 8 years ago for $1500 and a blown headgasket. I overpaid, but I didn't really know the values then, and they certainly were higher than now because gas was a bit cheaper. I've since found one for $500 complete with spun rod bearing and about $800 for a really clean one with a Head gasket issue.

Today, for a not running 60 in that condition, with all the smog there and nothing obvious like rust holes ANYWHERE on the body and the interior intact and no vermin nests (is that cat looking for lunch?), $1000. Maybe a bit more if it's low miles and you're sure the engine is good and it's a post 4/85 model... But I think an initial offer of $500 is in order. :D

Good luck.

Listen to the boys in cali.. the emissions passing could possibly be a nightmare for you ending in thousands extra. According to CA law the current owner must pay for complete emissions passing prior to sale of the vehicle.. Grab the vin and call Toyota and have the check their OLD SYSTEM to see if the tank recall has been done.

I agree with the other guys, start low like around $500. I picked mine up in Utah with a dead smog pump and wobbling steering pump for 1500. Almost a year later she is still running strong but needs more TLC.

Before you give an offer:

-Check if registration is NON-op or Expired. Check how much fees. If expired, be ready to pay $$$ to DMV.

-When was the last time it was smog? did it pass? Are all the smog equipment intact?

The rig looks like a good base point for a project. How is the interior? Body panel and rust you can easily repair. Good condition Interior parts are hard to come by these days.

To me $500 is a good offer:)

Thank you all for your knowledgeable inputs!

Hey thank you. Also, I'm such a noob. How do you know it's a 5-speed ready model?

The crossmember is the give-away. It is held on with four bolts per side with the heads pointing down. An earlier style like mine bolts in with four bolts per side but on the inside of the frame. Bolts turned 90 degrees. Also mine is three piece held together with bolts. I believe the one you pictured is one piece spanning the frame. I would prefer that one. Mine is annoying when trying to pull it off.
