Located a 2001 with 52000 on the clock for $28000. Heres the rub IMO, no history on the vehicle. Bought from a Toyota dealer 9 months ago. Does have the extended warranty.

1) Is $28k a decent price for a 2001 LC?

2) Should not having any history be a deterrent in buying this vehicle?

Thanks

Brad

It's up to you, but it would be for me. I have a friend who owns (not a lease) a '01 LC, did little maintenance to it so far other than dino oil changes every 7K mi w/ aftermarket filter, new rear aftermarket pads at 52K mi since the original ones wore out, air filter at 30K mi, and new diff/t-case fluid at 60K mi. Still the original ATF at 72K mi, never lubed the d-shafts or re-torqued any bolts, never had the dealer and any shop do any service. His attitude is, 'these vehicles are tough. They don't need much maintenance'. Knowing the history of this vehicle (and that it's been parked outside for 1.5 yrs literally yards from ocean salt spray and has a few rust spots in the tailgate...for a life-long So. CA vehicle), I wouldn't buy it. I'm sure it would still last at least 200K, but I'm sure there are also better maintained vehicles out there that would sell for the same price.

Take this for what its worth....Last week my dad bought an 03 49K miles for 31.5k Loaded..dealer was orig. asking 41k a 2 months ago, then 34.5k

Another reference point, I bought my '01 in Jan. 2005 with 68K miles and in excellent shape for $25,500.

there's some on ebay & autotrader w/ that kind of mileage for the $25k range.

Have it checkout by your own shop. They can tell if it's been maintained. If its in good shape buy it for around $25 or less. If the dealer had it for 9 months then they will deal. These LC's are not moving, I know of a 2000 that they want $21K w/80K miles that has been setting for 9 months. The price tag is faded from the sun :)

Sellers are taking a beating on 100 series

I sold my 2001 LX 470 yesterday for $23,900. It was a pearl white, 91K perfect, and I really mean perfect, vehicle. I had people on ebay and auto trader offering me $20K-22K for about two weeks before someone finally came to see and drive it. The guy drove it, shook hands and returned to his car. Never even popped the hood. I followed him to the credit union where we did the deal.

For buyers this is a good market to buy a 100 series - sellers are taking a beating thanks to our mideast friends and post-Katrina gas gougers.

For newer LC's/LX's, I'm not sure if gas prices really directly affect demand. Someone who's willing to shell out $50K+ for a nearly new LC/LX doesn't really care about fuel prices. At least we're not paying European prices...cost me $60 to gas up a tiny Opel hatchback (about $6/gal). For that much, I can fully gas up the LX.

Don't know where you are at. At least in the Boston area, there are few 01 with around 51k mileage asking at $25K. At one point, a super size local dealer had 3 of them with similar mileage, and were asking $22k with Nag systems.:D

It's only going to get better for the buyers :) If you already own a 100 series you don't need to be a seller since these babies last for 250K+ miles with normal maintance.

Sounds like a lot. I just got an '01 with 84K, gray, great shape but no records for $21.6K.

It took me a few months to find it, though. If you're patient, or even better willing to go a state or two away to find it, you'll come across a great deal.

Best of luck!

At lunch I went to a dealer to look at two Cruisers. One was an 02(with Nav) with 63,000mi for 28k. The other an 01 74,000mi for 23k (no Nav). Both had tan interiors which I am trying to avoid so I didn't go any further. It wasn't a Toyota dealer, but would any Toyota service dept be able to look up the service history?

I would stay away from the nav on a older LC/LX, if they go out your talkin $5K or more for a replacement and i think you have to replace because i think they run the heating and cooling system.

Thanks SWUtah - that makes a lot of sense.
