How is this done in the 80 series??

Do you have photos you can post up?
cut a round plate with a diameter similar to the bearing cone, from a 0.15 mm tin sheet. install that plate then press the cone.. you'll need to use thinner preload shims

I'll dig a picture or take some on the next job.. this is a diagram from the Nissan fsm for an idea

So the thin sheet of metal (? custom kingpin plug) is installed before the bearing race for the top trunnion bearing, then the race, then the bearing.

Would also help if you could post up a photo of the Nissan plug or plate
and/or the Nissan part number.
