Just thought I'd report that I drove my LJ78 400km each way from Prince George to Smithers, B.C. at ~110km/h (~3100rpm) with absolutely no overheating issues. In fact, the factory water temp. guage rested at less than half the entire trip on the highway. Only when climbing the mountain to the ski hill did it rise to 50%.

Also saw among a bunch of North American 60 series a JDM SWB 7X and a JDM High Roof HJ61.

Sorry 2rivers the old lady had me busy the entire trip, it was shorter than I had expected. I'd have liked to have seen your units

Sounds like a good trip. Just because it's a LJ78 does mean you will have heating problems. I have had three in my driveway with no probelms. Did take a Terreno from Calgary to Revelstoke and back, Thrusday night, almost froze as the heater didn't work well at -30 . (should have taken the cruiser)

I know, everyone around here just had me scared :)

The Prado heaters work great, no complaints !

Glad to hear your truck is not suffering from the dreaded crack-head problem! I'd still consider installing a mechanical water temp gauge, though. I was running both an aftermarket gauge and the stock in-dash gauge, and I was astonished at the stock gauges failure to respond to significant temp spikes. I've heard that surfs have the same issue - the gauge just doesn't respond quickly enough.

My $.02

I wonder if the guages in my HDJ81 would suffer from the same issues as your 78? I would hate for something to happen to my 1HD-T. I wonder if between a pyro and stock coolant temp guage if I have my bases covered.

Also 3100 rpm seems really high for a diesel to be running on the highway.

Cheers,
Nick

Wow, that explains it.
4.9 gears are really high on a stock rig.
Kinda like my old Suzuki LJ with stock 5.29's.

It was at 4400rpm to go 80kph.
But oh, did ever crawl when I wanted it too. :)

yep, the LJ78 can do almost all the trails around here in High range with 30" tires... i am guessing i can go to 35s for use of the low range gearing...
;^)
