There's a good chance the fluid is original from the factory. Changing it may be a cheap fix to your problem;) If your reservoir is mounted remote from the pump, then pull it out and give it a good rince with cleaning solvent, and blow dry with compressed air. If the reservoir is mounted directly onto the pump, I would leave it alone (braking the seal may cause leaks). Change the fluid, I'm sure that will help:cheers:

Raise the front so that both wheels spin freely. Remove the return hose from the reservoir and place in a suitable container. (you may need help for this) Then, with the motor not running, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. This will pump the fluid out of the system. Once empty, connect the hose and top up the reservoir with fresh ATF (Dexron 3 or similar) and follow the bleeding instructions in the manual.;)

Not clear from the factory manual if I need to run the engine to drain the fluid or not. This is starting to sound like a stupid question…

I did my HZJ75 with the engine running last week .The old fluid stunk and was almost black and the pump was noisy.
I undid the return and pumped it into a plastic coke bottle. I turned the idle down real low but it still pumps pretty fast .
Allow some extra fluid for flushing to make sure all the old fluid is out

I also added some PS reconditioner 1st and let that circulate to clean the stator and vanes.

All went well ,steering is now super quiet;)
I used Dexron III ATF (Dexron II is obsolete here)

It worked! But what about those vibes?

So I drained the fluid and replaced with new ATF today. Took a lot of turning on the ground and in the air to bleed it afterward. But it works perfectly! No more stiff turning. Now it remains to find the nasty driveline problem. Tried changing the fluid in the rear diff. to no avail. The rear diff. is actually fairly tight, but sounds clunky compared to the front, which has more rotational play, but is silky smooth. I'm thinking TC. When I had the driveshaft off and tried turning the flange, it turned quite a bit. If I wiggle it, it feels as if something is loose. Could there that much flopping around in the gears? Can the flange come loose on the shaft while the nut is still staked? It's all japanese to me…Taking apart the TC sounds like a scary proposition. Looking for wisdom.

There is always a fair bit of backlash in the drive train, with all those cogs & bearings it can't be helped;) Have you tried greasing the telescopic joint and universal joints on the drive shaft? They could be dry or worn a little. The pinion flange is normally slightly loose, as long as the seal isn't leaking, I would leave that alone. The slack is taken up under load anyway. The only other thing it could be is your drive shaft may have taken a hit from a large rock or log and bent it slightly, unlikely though:cheers:
