My 89 FJ62 blew what I believe to be the high pressure power steering line (due undoubtedly to corrosion). Fortunately it was very close to my house and I got it back home quickly. I was able to secure a good used set of lines (both high pressure and return) and now must have the vechichle towed to a mechanic to work on it. The guy have been using has been pretty good in the past but he doesn't specialize. As I look at the situation it appears that the radiator has to be taken off to be able to replace these lines. Is this really the case? It seems like if you could remove the shroud under the radiator you might be able to do it another way. I just don't know, but I thought you all could point my mechanic in the right direction. Any helpful hints are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is a hard line that runs on the frame on my 60 which is the low pressure side. I don't think you need to remove the radiator but am not sure. Which hose broke? The hard line on the frame? If you can't get another hard line, then you can just send the return into a line and mount a small transmission cooler on up front and then back to the PS reservoir. The return is low pressure so you can just use hose clamps. The only high pressure line is the line coming out of the back of power steering pump down to the gearbox. If you replace the high pressure line, watch out the aftermarket ones don't seal well. Compare the ends of the old hose to the new one.

I bought a used high-pressure line for my 62 a few years ago because I thought mine was about to rust through. After looking at it I decided to wait because it seemed like you'd even have to pull the radiator support to get the two front clamp bolts out.

Thanks for the comment. That was my initial read as well, but I was hoping against it

I have the same problem, high press line leaks due to rust/corrosion. I would say the radiiator and support need to be pulled. To avoid this and the expense of replacement part ($500 new, $225 used) I want to just have a generic hose made. I went to my local machine shop and they said they didn't have metric fittings; however, plenty of stuff to fit saginaw, or heep stuff. So, after searching, I found these guys and I am going to call tomorrow. Seems like the standard Toyota size is 16mm 1.5. I think I can buy this kit and an extra 16 mm fitting and it should work fine. Any thoughts?
