Power Steering box - where to go from here? (1 Viewer)

They can be tricky. It's all about getting them aligned. I found it helped to use a screwdriver as a lever to keep light downward pressure on the line.

Once I stopped wondering if there was a trick (thank you), I stopped overthinking it. I added some ATF to the hole and to the threads, adjusted the angle, and within a few twists everything caught. That is a significant lesson learned for me on this project: lube the parts as you put them together. Everything goes so much more smoothly! From teflon rings to seals to steering shaft to bolts. Thanks! It's back together. Getting cleaned up and going for an alignment today.

I believe all LHD 80 Series steering boxes are compatible across all years.
FJ80 steering box was originally part number 44110-60210.
FZJ80 steering box was originally part number 44110-60211.
Both of those part numbers have been superseded to 44110-60212.

If you have 1 box that is in good shape, the sector shaft is pretty easy to replace. I recently swapped my sector shaft and pitman arm for the 105 Series parts.
@jonheld Would appreciate your feedback here given your in depth understanding of the FJ80 vs FJZ80 differences. I have a 91 3FE FJ80 that I am about ready to have Red Head rebuild and do the 105 sector shaft upgrade. I need to order then ship Red Head the OEM parts and trying to make sure 1) I have have the complete list of part#s needed for the rebuild and 2) ensure the 105 sector shaft upgrade is indeed doable for the FJ80 steering box (and not just an FJZ80 only steering box upgrade). I've scoured through the various posts on this topic and believe it's good to go, but just dotting i's and crossing t's to make sure before I go down this path.

Parts List
• OEM Sector 105 shaft (44111-60060)
• OEM Pitman arm 105 (45411-60360)
• OEM Gear box gasket kit (04445-60050)
• OEM Lock nut (90170-22058)
• OEM Split washer (94511-02200)
• OEM BOLT, WASHER BASED (90105-12110)
• OEM Nuts (90179-12085)

Yes, this applies to FJ80 steering gearboxes as well.

Curious how the rebuild / upgrade went. My gearbox started leaking bad after moving to colder weather and looking at options.

So the rebuild on the ps gearbox as far as Red Head concerned was an A+ experience—top notch folks to work with, no question about it. The part that made it difficult was the shop that pulled out the gearbox didn’t insure it when sending via USPS to Red Head even though I asked them to insure it and it low and behold it ended up getting lost in the mail. They did do the right thing though and covered the cost of a new ps gearbox core which thankfully Red Head had in their core inventory. The part list above is the complete list to do it. Some people would just assume reuse some of the bolts and hardware, but I wanted to have clean and new OEM yellow zinc hardware installed. So the sector 105 shaft upgrade on the ps gearbox rebuild in and of itself was a success. Now the only issue is I still have is the pesky ps gearbox whine which is still present after the shop “rebuilt” the ps pump it still whined, then put in a “rebuilt” one from Maval and it still whines.🤦‍♂️ Having spent so much money and time the inability to fix the ps pump whine has been a huge disappointment. To add insult to injury, Mr T discontinued the 91-92 FJ80 ps pump, but still has brand new OEM ones available for the FJ60, FJ62, FJZ80. If I didn’t love the Land Cruiser as much as I did and the adventures it has provided and will continue to provide my family to enjoy together I’d probably be close to throwing in the towel on it. Despite my LC project being over budget and having taken way longer than first imagined, there’s no way I’m getting rid of it! Sorry that was part answer to your question and part pent up frustration and venting needed about my LC Project.🙂 Now how to convince CARB and the powers that be in California that an LS3 6.2 E-Rod swap is actually way better for the environment than the alternative of forcing me to stick with the venerable 3FE.🤔 But that’s a topic for a different day and a different thread.

Good idea on the bolts, do you have part numbers for those?

I’m tempted to just snag a new gearbox so I can take it to a mechanic to swap, but I’m goin go see what the status is of the rebuilds these days.

Bummer about the pump, mine whines when it’s low on fluid but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time (91 as well).

Here’s the part list. I don’t remember the exact quantity off the top of my head for the # of nuts and bolts. Brand new gear boxes for 91-97 are available from Toyota, but they’re very expensive. In hindsight, would have Red Head rebuild again over purchasing a new ps gearbox.

Redhead did mine last spring. They don’t want the oem seal kit as they use their own “proprietary” seals on all rebuilds. I sent them only the gear box, 105 sector shaft, and the adjustment screw.
