Looking to join the 40 club. Does anybody know this 40?

Current owner says he bought it from a guy in Park City a couple years ago. Brakes were bad, steering was bad and he's upgraded both since.

Seems like a decent price for a 40 where the rust looks like it's been handled and is in good mechanical condition. Thoughts?

I'm going this afternoon. There's another in the neighborhood, a '78, that looks like it's in a little better condition (restored), but the price is double and the hard top has to be negotiated in.

I've been reading up on what to look for when shopping and have driven a couple. My main purpose is around town daily driver and wheeling on the weekends. I'll have driving teenagers starting next year and for the next 10 years after that and I'm thinking this isn't their vehicle, but it's a good one for them to drive and learn mechanic skills, off road skills, stick shift skills, nun-chuck skills, bow-staff skills...woops! Got a little carried away.

In case anyone else is in the market:

Welll...I drove it. It has more bondo than what shows up in the pictures, the doors have cancer on the bottom of them. Hard top looks acceptable. The current owner did the power steering conversion. He's got a real small pulley on it and no steering dampener, and the shocks are shot, so it's ''steer, guess, correct, guess, OH SH*T!'' when you're driving it down the road. Not bad to fix, but for my purposes I'd need to pay less than what he's asking. There's a *POP* in the front right end, He said he thinks it's a bushing on the spring, not sure. I think he was being honest overall, and it's probably worth the price if you want to build it in to something different than I want to do. Frame looked good, birfields looked good, engine, tranny, clutch, all seemed to be great. Leaks around the oil pan, but he has the gasket for it. It's de-smogged and the carb needs tuned.

What are "your purposes"? What do you "want to do"? Even with your description, that price is about right. For less money, you're going to get less. Those steering issues and the pop are way easier and cheaper to fix than a from-scratch Saginaw install.

Want a resto rig? Here's one if you have the $12000 (green one). It's easily worth more:

the deal of the day on KSL was the white one that went in a few hours a couple of days ago.I think it was an '80 for $8600.Worth every penny and more.

KSL is the NBC tv affiliate in Salt Lake City. They have a website that has awesome classifieds, it's pretty popular in several western states. I have a friend here in Phoenix that buys guns and cars on there frequently.

That's EXACTLY what I want...for $4k. :grinpimp:
No, you're absolutely right. I was looking for moderate to low rust, which this one is just right, and the repairs/mods that I want to make vs. what somebody else wants to make. I was probably a fool to pass on it, but it's sold now. Lesson learned I guess, and keep looking!

The thing about KSL is you have to be fast. If you think about it too long it's gone. This guy posted up his ad at 7:00 at night. The rig was sold next day by 3:00. Dealers are looking at the ads constantly for lowball deals. I figure if I post something and haven't heard back in 24 hours either my price is too high or something else is wrong with my ad.
