My rig needs tires, and I may update the springs while I’m at it. After purchase, I originally installed a HFS 1.5” lift with 31x10.5 Michelins. I’ve been happy with the combo, but the rear is sagging a bit even with no gear in the back. I’d consider taller lift, 2”+, but will 31” tires be too small At that point? Also, will tires larger than 31” drastically affect mileage? 10mpg is bad enough.

Photos and a description of your lift and tire size would be helpful.

Thanks!

My current setup:

You should be getting better than 10. I get 13 city and 15 highway with a 340k desmogged 2F/h55f/3.70 gears and plenty of extra weight.

I’m on OME CS005 springs front and rear, OME shackles with Bilstein shocks. My tires are 255/85r16 or “33x9.5” equivalent in 16x6 70 series wheels. I’ve also got a 62 rear sway bar with extended sway bar end links front and rear.

Its really comfy and handles nice. The shocks make a world of difference.

Remember that the odometer is calibrated to 28 inch tires. 31 inch tires will set back the odometer about 10%. But even 11 mpg in city is a bit low. 12.5mpg around town is pretty normal when driving softly.

Dobinsons MRR

Can’t say enough good about these springs and shocks. Now that it’s dialed in it rides as good as my 80.

Tires 255/85-16

Yeah, I get 10-12 max mpg too

OME 2.5 Heavy Front/Med Rear BFG 33X10.5's on FJ40 Steelies. No idea on mileage. If I cared about gas mileage, a 30+YO carb'ed truck with engine tech dating back to the 1930's would be the last thing I'd drive. Spoiler Alert: It sucks. HTH.

Nice rig!

Wow, yes those shocks look like they would be amazing. I bit out of my price range for now though. So your rig is essentially on a 2" lift? I couldn't see any other height options on their website. Also, your rims are 16"s? Are they FJ40s like Gretsch's? Where did you source them? You happen to know ideal rim width and backspacing?

Looks great!

I'm leaning toward black steelies though I'm not sure the actual FJ40 rims are easy to get these days. I like how they have the hubcap clips. I think I wanna go with hubcaps on mine. Do you know the specs on the rims? Width and backspacing?
Also, curious why you went with heavy front/med rear spring combo? I have a 40 gal fuel tank and rear tire carrier bumper, so I'll probably need the heavy load rear springs.

You can get 15” Steelies from Toyota. Look in the wheel and tire forum for all the options under Steel Wheel Tech

The Dobinsons is worth it even if you get the yellow shocks and upgrade if you want.

Mine are the non-riveted steelies for clearing the front calipers. Backspacing I believe on those is 3.25 and sizing is 15X5.5. These AFAIK are still readily available through any Toyota dealership (try P/N: 42601-60072 maybe). I bought mine used from a fellow mudder through the mud classifieds and had them blasted and powder coated silver.

Or try these:

As far as the lift setup, I wanted to avoid the normal silly looking stink bug rake typically associated with the OME kits. I don't have a bunch of accessories to weigh down the rear of my truck like most folks. Other than the lift and a receiver hitch its a pretty stock setup. I also have slightly extended front shackles to additionally help with any stink bug front to rear. Even with all that it still sits slightly higher in the back. Looks normal when pulling my little trailer. Its slight but I notice it. HTH.

I’m on 33s” on 15” rims with a 2” OME lift.

this whole thread is just validating my desire (need?) to get a 2" lift on 33x10.5s or 255/85, as most people have published here. It really has the right proportions for a 60.

No pics of my ride as I'm unsure of the suspension provenance other then that its stock-ish (and old Monroe shocks of some sort), but I have 31x10.5 and they work great. Average about 13mpg highway and 11mpg city with an all-stock setup (2F, H41, stock rear axle, adjusted for odo), probably have some fine-tuning to do.

According to what I’ve seen, stock height as measured from hub center to bottom of fender is 17.75” rear and 20.125 “ front. Approximately.

OME Heavy with Summit 16” wheels and 235/85 Cooper Discoverer AT3’s. This is my first set of non BFG tires, and I gotta say they are ****ing awesome. Quieter and longer wearing than BFG AT’s and I feel better traction. I get almost 11mpg in town and maybe 14mpg on the highway. I’m also running the Holley Sniper, not Asian carb. Previously I had 33x10.5 BFG MT3 and 31x10.50 BFG AT’s on this truck, and so far this is by far my favorite setup.
