I was on the trail in Idaho last weekend and lost a piece of tread on some super sharp lava rock, but didn't cause a flat.

My question is this...is it possible to do anything to cover the exposed portion of the tire or is it a total loss?

That tire is done, judging by the checking/cracking around the other tread blocks, it was already done, aged out.

This is exactly what I was going to post after seeing the age cracks in the rest of the tire.

I assume the other 3 tires on the rig look like that one minus the trial damage??? You should have replaces all 4 of those a while ago, I never let anything i own get tire wear beyond 75% of usable tread life or more than 6 years past manufacture date. Tires are the ONLY thing in contact with the road and the ONLY thing actually controlling where you are going and what your ride is doing in relation to the rest of the world. Going, stopping turning every action of car control is dependent on the TIRES doing the work. Dont even get me going on "cheap tires" either

Either way yeah that skin is toast,

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I bought the rig earlier this year with these tires already on it. I just checked the date and they are from 08. Definitely time to replace them based on age and rot/cracking.

If you drive with a tire in that condition, there is a VERY GOOD chance that it will blow... Replace it, and if the other three are cracked like that, get a new set. Those tires must be over 6 years old. I went thru a blown tire back in november. I replaced them with BFG KM2 15 inch. Since I wanted to get 16 inch wheels, I went and replaced the KM2s with KO2s.
