My '71 is starting to make some noises in first gear and pops out when the revs get high. Fluid is topped off with no obvious metal bits on the magnetic plug. 2nd and 3rd are just fine.

Is something serious starting to go? The throwout bearing has been complaining for awhile so it's almost time to pull the trans and fix things.

I've been twisting wrenches for awhile but have never tackled a transmission. Are special tools required for the FJ? What shoud I replace while the thing is apart?

Is this a 3 on the tree or a floor shift?

Had the same problem,I picked up a used 3-speed for $40 works fine.

You shoud be able to find one for damn near nothing. It'll be a lot cheaper than trying to rebuild you're old unit.

I didn't realize you were in Tucson, I'll send you a pm on a source.

It's three-on-the-tree, kinda clunky at first, but pretty cool when I got used to it. Putting another unit in sounds like a good choice. Should be able to do that myself.

Thanks for the PM Splitshot. I think he's already done a bunch of work on this Cruiser.
