With the recent epidemic of HG failures, I decided to do a preemptive strike. I got IdahoDoug's DVD and all of the parts from CDan. The pics are of the 5-6 area and some of the various parts.

There appears to be no damage to the HG. This is a 1994 with about 140K on it.

It looks a little iffy inside the box. That is the area where they seem to fail most. I do not think you wasted your time or money Richard.

I'm thinking mine is comming out sooner than later.

Richard,

Interesting comparo. I think you actually did yourself a big favor - bigger than you realize. In your top picture, the bottom half of the gasket is dark and is the plastic sealant that was against the block on the hotter exhaust side. See how that stayed on the gasket when you pulled it off, whereas the intake side a lot of the adhesive was well secured to the block, and not dark? To the rest of you, the heavily textured areas on this intake side are exposed metal layer, which is contoured to grip the plastic layer and engine surfaces.

Your gasket was coming loose and likely had some coolant seeping between it and the iron block. That's why the adhesive simply lifted off the exhaust side.

So, it was beginning to move in earnest with each heat/cool cycle. And of course a heavy heat load may have been the proverbial straw.

So, back together yet or is this a mid-job photo?

unless, of course, it got banged up when scraped off...?

Also any place where the fire ring is black(not shiny) the ring is not sealing well in this area, If it looks like carbon, it probley is carbon. The ring is sealing not so good, if carbon is there it is working its way towards the coolant passage. Yes you did your self a favor. besides the other area that dan and doug pointed out. later robbie

One small tip - when you install the new gasket - there is a lip that extends out on the front driver's side that can cut your rear alternator belt if not bent up and out of the way. Was on mine anyway. Good luck.

rgsiii-great pics.

You need to make a meeting or come to a event with the CLC!

I took your advice from this summer seriously when you suggested that the HG be changed. I appreciate the attention you gave to my vehicle when I passed through your area.

Nice talking the other day...drop a line again for a chat.

could somebody in the know remind me what is the DIY cost of a good (meaning no skimping corners, replacing what is smart to replace once it's open) job replacing the HG?
- how many $?
- how many hours?

That is very open-ended.
Injectors?
Water pump?
Thermostat?
Hoses?
And so-on
