Late speedos will not read right for early pigs they read about 10MPH fast
I know this is an old thread but a few comments on my recent experience. Background:
1) 1969 pig with what I think was an original speedo
2) swapped in a 2F with new H55F 5-speed and a 1987 split transfer case
3) custom cable to connect the tcase and screw in connection at speedo
4) odometer stuck but speedo slightly off as per GPS speed and I assumed this was due to 33” tires

I bought a used gauge cluster from someone who did not know the year or if it was working but it did have the clip in connection. I actually bought it to practice on taking apart and cleaning. Well with a drill I confirmed this one worked both speed and odometer so I cleaned it up cosmetically, bought a new speedo cable and installed.

The good => the speed registered correctly for all speeds. Not sure why but saw @OldBeachBob comment in this thread so I can confirm it. Any thoughts on why? Also glass is cleaned, face is clean, repainted the needle with fluorescent orange, and replaced bulbs with LED. I can see the gauge at night now!

The bad => the odometer worked for 5 miles and then got stuck on 9 in the ones digit. The tenths digit spins happily along just like my old one. Guess I actually need to take it apart and clean now.

I took my 69 gauge apart 22 years ago and the grease on the odometer spindles that turn the numbers had seized up. This in turn causes the splines on the gear to gaul creating flat spot. Wasn’t something could fix without replacing the gears that drive the number. Bust it open you got nothing to loose. Sorry no pics from back in day.
