pinion play (1 Viewer)

Ok, now my NEW diff made some @&@&@&@&ty noises, so pulled it, and found the rotational play is about 1/8th of a turn, up and down playis about 1 inch at the pinion flange, and i can pull the pinion flange in and out (i.e. towards the back or front of the car) about 1/2 and inch to 1 inch.

diffs from a 1978 fj55.

so what do you think it could be... i had it setup with the detroit in it about 6 months ago.

also how hard would it be to set this up myself?

check the pinion nut isnt loose.

Otherwise it's probably the pinion bearing.

if it can slide in and out (boy, that sounds kinda odd), you don't have the pinion in tight enough, check nut first (like suggested above), otherwise, your shims or crush sleeve aren't correct. being able to slide back in will affect the up down movement also.

the nut is tight... very tight...

i payed a shop to do this 6 months ago... poorly set up from there, or just my abuse do you think?

The shop needs to stand behind their work...

I doubt you could have abused it that much.

damn. shop is in another state, but this is the last straw i think this'll force me to pull down my rig and give it a good going over, so i guess it can wait...
