Hey Guys, bare with me, I have been wanting to start a build thread but I am not too forum savvy.

I bought my 76 Fj55 from CruiserMax in the Seattle area late winter in '09. He had done a lot of work to it (body and paint, sliders, rear bumper, etc) but finally realized he needed a 40 for the PNW trails. My wife was on her 3rd Fj60 and told me that she wanted something "brighter and with more character". I showed her a 55 and she was hooked.

Brought it home and pulled the manifolds to install new gaskets, and then rebuilt the carb and gave it all new vacuum hoses. It was a real hard start, but ran great when you could get it running. It got to the point of unpredictability that I decided to yard the 2F.

The truck came with a Ranger Torque Splitter (with electric shifter), so I did some research and then went and found myself a 350.

When I put the new engine in place, I found that the mini-truck poser steering was going to get in the way of the manifold, so it all came out. I never really like the design anyway, so i went with the much simpler Fj60 set-up. I was a little gun shy to do this, but it proved to be really straight forward and i really like how it has turned out. Much cleaner, less parts to wear out etc. I figured since the PS bracket was going away, so was the shock mount, so I cut the shock tower off the other side and installed F-250 towers.

Here are some pics of patching the fender well back in.

After that, I had the front inner clip all sandblasted and powdercoated off-white and painted the inner grill black. Also some of the misc brackets were blasted and PC'd. Here is the end result with the IPF headlights installed.

Next I needed to build a fan shroud. I have to say that there was some heavy opinions from the locals as to whether this design would work, but it works really well. I needed to fashion a top clamp for the aluminum radiator, so the fan shroud does double duty as a clamp and a shroud. Had is all PC'd after it was done.

More later.

very nice pig sir. i dig on the attention to detail.

Thanks guys. Here are some more pics.

When I bought the rig it was used as a weekend warrior, taking the wife and the dogs to the beach and what-not. The PO had 33's on white spokes, shackle lift and a bull bar. All of that had to go. I always loved the look of a stock 55, and the stock rims and caps, with oversized tires is the look for me. I removed all the offroad add-ons, including the CB and other interior bolt-ins to clean the rig up. It now has a new headliner, new carpet, dash cap, heated leather seats, tuffy console with stereo, tons of Dynamat and insulation to attempt to keep the road noises down. Also, the truck came with an open chamber Flowmaster that is now muffling my V8. It sounds great but it also has to go. These trucks are noisy enough without a burly exhaust!

Here is the power supply I stole out of a Toy pickup at the wrecking yard. It eliminates the fuseable links and puts the stock harnes on a replaceable fuse. It also supplies power to the stereo, power seats and seat heaters, so that none of that power is pumped through the old harness.

Some pics of the seat install. I didnt want to cut out the stock seat mounts so I made brackets to work with them.

thanks for looking!

Nice rig! Hey, do you have any more pics of your swing out rear bumper? I'm trying to design one and I'm looking hard at what everyone has done. Yours seems to be a bit different than the run of the mill pre fabbed units. Keep up the work!:)

Very nice work!

It turned out great, Matt !! We gotta talk, I'm in need of a shroud as well. Now for a build thread on the Dodge.........

Nice seeing it all in one place. Are you still contemplating using the 60 series heater/ac components on the interior or have you gotten that far yet? Very very cool Matt.

Mike, that stuff is still sitting in the garage. Project for another day.
Roch, I will be in the Black Hills the first week of June. Think you can make it?
Thanks Alex, hard to find a 56 Dodge pickup forum (not that I have really looked!)

LambCrusher, I will take some more pics. It was there when I bought the truck and is stout to say the least. The PO did a nice job on it. All custom built and has a jerry can rack and HiLift mounts too.

Wow Max,
I have never seen the 'before's'. You did a LOT of work!

Bashmatic awesome setup you have. Looks great! Your wife is one lucky lady.
I had a questions about the Dynamat.
About how much did you use and did you try any other brands of sound dampening?
Was it worth it?
Thanks and keep the build pics coming!

I remember this rig.......seems like Max had some dogs in it....love the green color.

grncobra,
the Dynamat works but i am not convinced it is the best solution. certainly not the cheapest. i have about $300 in dynamat and more in closed cell foam behind the headliner. i would be curios to try Lizard Skin or something, but i have blown my sound-deadening budget. my next step is to 86 the flowmaster. that will definitely make the truck quieter, and i need to replace the pinch-weld seals at the door jams. that will help too.
if that isnt enough, i will try more sound deadener! (or earplugs!)

Thank you, Max.:cheers:That is one heck of a rack! Hope you don't mind me copying your tire carrier! History is always cool. Keep it coming
