There seem to me two versions of maxtrax mounting pins. A "regular" pin set and an "extreme" pin set. Anyone know what the difference is? I can't tell from the picture on Kaon's website.

extreme

Edit: upon further review, the "extreme" pins are need for the "extreme" (metal studded) boards. Duh.

The Extremes are for the Extreme Maxtrax set of 4. I found out today that a pair of MKII Maxtrax will not nest with a pair of Extreme Maxtrax on the normal pins. I could barely fit a single MKII with a pair of Extremes on a set of pins made for 4 MKIIs which surprised me. They do not nest as tight, so I'm sure the Extreme pins are simply longer/taller. Here you can see the difference in how they nest:

thanks! I just googled my way to that answer 30 seconds ago. I am about to pull the trigger on a set of four and would do the extreme boards but dropping a grand on recovery boards is a bit hard to do. Not liking how they don't nest as well as the MKII.

Once I get my dissent bumper with tire carrier (still several months out), I am going to buy or make a mount to attach the tracks to the spare tire when I go off road for ease of access, and to get the maxtrax pins off the roof.

I haven't seen an a commercial tire attachment option that I like. The GP Factor is the closest, but I don't like the threaded attachment they have for the boards: seems like removing and reattaching would be time consuming (based on the video I watched). So I will probably rig something up using an aluminum plate and the Maxtrax pins.

Hey Charlie, you do this yet? I want to copy whatever you did.

I have two pairs of TRED Pros that I mounted to a Vuctory 4x4 side panel. The traction boards weigh 32 pounds altogether. The side panel is only rated to 20 pounds so I added two extra mounting cups which I assume brings the dynamic load rating up to 60 lbs. Added a couple zip ties for piece of mind, no issues so far.

4x maxtrax on maxtrax pins on a dissent accessory panel. They fit like they were meant to be.

I love this setup to maintain lowest roof profile as possible. Also I’m 5’6”, I’ve only got so many jumps left from the rear tire before I blow an Achilles 😁

Since you said “or other traction boards”…

You won’t be bridging with these, but I prefer the compact size of Go Treads…

Got my maxtrax extreme boards the other day. These things are much heavier that I thought they would be. Well actually, I didn't think about it. I haven't weighed them, but they website says they weigh 20lbs each. That is 80 lbs I'm putting up on my roof or wherever I mount them. My cheapo boards I doubt weigh 5 lbs.

Finally finished up my adapters plate and bought tamper resistant hardware to mount the FrontRunner Max Trax brackets to my Prinsu. Simple design that allows me to still keep surfboards on the roof and is semi tamper resistant overnight. May get MaxTrax lockable pins or may just run a good cable lock through 2-3 of the d ring bolts.

@mcgaskins It must've been your setup that I saw posted previously that got me thinking about just mounting to the factory rack. It definitely seems like the most straightforward and inexpensive way to go.

Since I already have the Maxtrax mounting pins and even some spare crossbars, it would be free.

How is wind noise with the Maxtrax mounting pins in place when you are running without the Maxtrax? I'll be running without them more than I will with them.

If I do this, was thinking about replacing the locknut with a wing nut so the pins can be removed when not in use. But if they are unobtrusive, maybe that is a bad idea...
Just a note for anyone that does this with stock bars and plans to remove the maxtrax pins: you may find that you get a whistling noise when the pins are removed. Kind of like when you blew air across the top of a coke bottle as a kid. The easy fix is to cover the holes - I put small squares of automotive vinyl over the holes. Problem solved.

Then I removed the roof rack. lol

Now I am trying to decide where I want my maxtrax on my gamiviti expo rack. I have his maxtrax mounting bases and the maxtrax pins, so I have lots of options.

What bag is that? I need a bag for my Gotreads
That’s the Blue Ridge Overland Large Recovery Bag. It’s a tight fit but will leave you with a little room on one end once they’re in there 😉

Not yet, I expect it will arrive mid-April.
Hey @CharlieS, did you ever build your tire carrier mount? I ended up building a simple roof mount that works but I don't like them there. I think a tire carrier would be better but the ones that look good are expensive (I know, that's how it works).

Not really.

I've tried a bunch of solutions, what I'm using now is a mount from Maxtrax that straps to the spare tire.

I only put it on when I am on a trip and leave it hanging on the wall of the garage most of the time.

I also have a plate solution from Gamiviti, but I broke one of my maxtrax mounting pins (in a rush used a battery tool and galled the hardware) so never got around to trying it in the field. It has potential though.

I've looked at that harness but I don't know it it will work for 4 extreme boards. It was made for the normal ones. 4 extremes stacked together are thicker as they don't nest as well.
