I just bought the MAF spare carrier that can carry the cooler box. It looks like the tire will cover the tail lights.....So now I gotta move them. I think I'll put them in parallel with the existing lights, or just unplug them and use the wire to the new ones.

However I want to have some wheelin worthy lights now and I'm not sure which way to go. Any photo's or suggestions are welcome

heres mine and they dont stick out

Which one did you purchase?

Got a link to the MAF site?

I have installed A LOT of these carriers on the 40 series from 1968 to 1980 trucks and none of them have had an issue with seeing the tail lamps.

Hell, I run a 42" tall tire and carry a full-size spare on the back of my 1969 40 series on one of the MAF carriers and I do not block my tail lamps...

:meh:

got some pics poser??

Yep they are usable on his truck, but mine are not mounted in the bumper, mine are factory in the body. Of all these carriers you have put on that have not blocked the lights, were they much different then this carrier? I cannot see my original factory lights working now, but have never installed this carrier before.

When you wrote that you had installed several and not had them block the stock tail lights, was that with a different year tail light design then 1977?

77 should be all the same.

you say it looks like it covers the lights? have you tried to bolt it on yet?

Please post up a picture of the rear of your 1977 40 series with your factory rear tail lights that are in the body.

Here is a fresh photo of the back; maybe I'm mistaken and these will be fine, but I think that spare tire will block them?

Here is another side view of this 1977 cruiser. Not bad shape for all original paint and body. Needs a bit of restoration but nothing serious.

I have 33X10.50's going on this Tuesday it needs them with the 410 gears.

the problem is is that those arent stock, wish we wouldve know

There is not much 'original' about those lights....

Rear frame sure does not look 'original' either...

yeah dude - do a search for 1977 FJ40 taillights and you'll see that we aren't lying! the lights pictured on the MAF website are indeed stock - 100%

since your truck has already been modified you could just go and put some LED brake/blinkers in whats left of your rear crossmember and call it a day!

The PO just bolted up a slab of metal across the back, the frame is original just covered with that steel plate.

If the lights are not original then I don't know how they did this as they are mounted in factory painted brackets which are visible on the inside of the truck?

So I guess this is some unique design, or a very well done "visually" factory modification? No body work looks to have been done for this?

Your PO installed 'slab of metal' is NOT AS WIDE as your factory 1977 frame would have been...

Those light buckets are painted black...and you can find them on the Internet if you look around for about five minutes...

That back up lamp is not supposed to be there either...

Sorry to burst your bubble there chum, but I suspect if you get this truck in front of a person that knows these vehicles, they will find a lot of things that are not original...

You Sir, do not have an "all original, not molested, factory blah, blah, blah" FJ-40.

Then the factory paint in now in question. Post the inside pics. It sounds like the PO did a decent install and not a hack job. Nice 40

Tail lamps in the body of a 40 series IS A HACK JOB !
