I picked up a factory hood catch off eBay last week to add to my '73 bib. I can be a forgetful person sometimes and the thought of forgetting to latch the hood and having my freshly painted hood fly up at 50 mph just turns my stomach. So, I figure it would be smart to add the hood catch mechanism to the bib to prevent disaster. I was hoping it would become obvious where it mounted on the late model cruisers once I had the part in hand, but it has not.

Can anyone take a photo of a factory hood catch that mounts to the bib? I've already got my '73 bib blasted and primered so I'd rather not buy a new bib, if it can be helped. I'm ok with fab'ing a bracket if it's not too complicated.

Thanks!

hood catch

I just did what your talking about on an early bib that has lights. I had already painted the bib so I did not want to weld it in. I just some low profile SS size 10 bolts to mount in just under the hood cushin rubber pieces. You will have to grind out part of the bib opening for the latch handle to clear. I will shoot some pictures this evening and post if no one else puts up some pics.

Which style do you have? Early style you reached in around the bezel pulled a rod to release. Later style you release the hooks. Lift the hood and lift. In teh gap there is a flat plate you push in.

Here's pics of the later type from my picture folder if they are of any use to you IelandEOD:

And from '81-'84 in Australian/NZ market there was and interior release. This had a different mount again.

That and the locking steering column. If Toyota wasn't so worried about gas mileage they may have made a real effort to complete with jeep in the US instead of pushing the four cylinder mini truck. We may have gotten some of the LX models over here.

think its pretty easy to add the locking wheel on 81+, think the glove box had a lock as well. If I recall the 60 series bits swap over

US models had the rotating knob on the glove box from '81, but Australia never got them, even on the LX.

I have the later style like the one in the photos posted by Lostmarbles.

I would love to see some photos of the actual method of attachment. There must be some sort of bracket welded to the inside of the bib to mount the latch onto.

Any photo assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

This is inside the back of a 1984 bj42 lx bib

And to compliment Steve's post above .... Some more close-up pics:

Hmmm.

Never mind those little blue tabs/brackets I added to my bib (to support a future section of wiring loom that will travel from my battery to a new battery support I plan on mounting on the other side of my engine bay for an on-board air compressor) but my bib still appears different from Steve's.

The bolt-holes for Steve's hood catch appear to me to be further apart.

And I'm gueessing that's because an 84 LX would have had the special hood-release that's operable from inside the cab (so it's hood-catch-mechanism would no doubt be larger).
