Is Permatex stuff e.g. thread locker and gasket maker, just good to use as Loctite brand?

I understand there is a history with the two and have been told that Permatex still makes Loctite product.

The Loctite numbers are referenced on the Permatex containers.

e.g. Permatex blue medim strength threadlocker has a code number of 242 on the containter which apparently is referencing it to Loctite 242. Same with Permatex gasket maker, it has code number 518, referencing it to Loctite 518.

I use 271 locktite for work all the time for rebuilding gear boxes. Once up in Maine I needed some and I could only find the Permatex equivalent. So I used it and the following day the gear box ran for about a minute and a half and let go. Since then I won't touch the stuff.

Just for reference, a gear box typically has a service life of about 15 years.

Dude, you're supposed to use it ON the fasteners, not INSTEAD of the fasteners.

If you want to replace the fasteners, you have to use JB Weld.

in our application there are no fasteners or any threads at all. Everything is a hand slip fit done on site and then "glued" together.

Thank you for writing, Byron.
To answer your question, Loctite and Permatex are separate brands produced by different companies. Although the product numbers are similar, the numbering system originated with Loctite. However, the two products you mentioned have their own distinctive proprietary formulas and specifications.

Hope this helps,

Someone told me that Permatex and Loctite were the same but split and that permatex is the cheaper made in China brand.

I don't know if this is just a tall tale but it's all the same to me.

Loctite 248 for fasteners... (I like the 19gr Quick-Stix)

I won't touch Permatex stuff.
