I am thinking about upgrading to a Mean Green alternator and starter. Anyone on here have the part numbers for the starter and alternator for a 1HD-T engine with a five speed manual and air con?

Which part number, Toyota's or mean green?
What's wrong with the denso alt and starter?

Toyota. Nothing wong yet, but I'm builiding my rig up to be an overland, and I'll need extra juice.

You would be hard pressed to get a better alternator and starter than the Denso. I think the 80 series only have an 80 amp but you can get a Denso alternator that's rated at 110amp from the 1HZ that's a straight swap.
I would invest in batteries rather than trying to make more power.
I had a 110amp alternator charging 2x700cca truck batteries and a huge deep cycle battery. The alternator kept them fully charged and I could run an 80 litre fridge and lighting for 2-3 days without using the engine.
If you have a huge alternator and not enough batteries, there is no where to go for the power you are making to go during the day.
Denso starters on the 1HZ/1HD T are good for 4-500000klms. They are very well made.

This is a 12v 100amp 7* series alternator 27060-17181. Maybe I imagined it was 110 amp, I cant see one in the parts list
This is the 12v 2.5kw starter. 28100-17040.

Is yours one of those that starts on 24v and then switches to 12v?

Mean Green alternator is a piece of s***. Do not waste your time. Or you will be posting back from your car camping trip and pissed that you are in the middle of Ashville and it failed.

My HDJ81 fired on the first compression stroke every time on the Denso starter. I had to replace contacts in the starter at one point, but it was a $15 fix

Now, I have 24 volt, which switch over to 12 when the rig is started. Will there be any issues?

I think you have that backasswards.

HDJ81 run on a 12 volt, parallel dual battery system, and links the two batteries in series for 24 volts for the starter.

Issues?
- 24 volt starter erodes the contacts in the starter quicker than a 12 volt system. See above
- with the dual battery system and 24 volt start, if one battery is weak, it will quickly drag the other down and you can end up with two dead batteries. Good battery maintenance is critical. Premature battery failures gets old quick

OK, sounds like a better bet, fiscally. Now, I have 24 volt, which switch over to 12 when the rig is started. Will there be any issues? Should I upgrade the starter? If so, which one?

i wouldnt bother upgrading the starter unless there is a bigger factory option. if the truck is having issues starting than i would doubt that a bigger starter would help and the issue is something else, unless the contacts are bad or the starter has actually failed in some way.

Landcruisers are a complete package , they don't need starter or alternator upgrades.
Sort of agree on starter...I would want the largest factory offering.

Disagree entirely on alternator, 70A or whatever the stock alt puts out is not enough if you are winching, running lights, etc. Even running around here in the winter with the heater on high and the lights on seems to overtax the stock alternator. 150A Tundra alt is sitting in my garage to be installed when I get around to it.

The glow plug system draws so much power my power windows barely work in the winter. Since getting the webasto hooked up means no more cold starts = no more glow plug cycling, it's made a huge difference for the power windows. A bigger alternator would be the way to go if there was ever an issue with my current one.

Doesn't fit a 1HD-T without a custom bracket (photoman bracket doesn't work).

Partially correct. No need for either the Photoman bracket or a custom one. You do, however, need to grind off the extra mounting tab on the alternator which is not needed and gets in the way. Also need to change to the correct connector for the alt. I have been running a 150a alt for the last 18 mos with zero issues. I had already upgraded the harness Photoman style when I had the 1FZ-FE, so the only writing change was extending the harness to the opposite side of the motor.

I can actually confirm that's not the case...there is more required than just grinding off the tab.

I have tried with both versions of the factory alt bracket, and both have significant interference with the actual case of the 150A Tundra alt.

Since Photoman's name is getting dropped all over the place here I think it appropriate to mention his all-time-favorite quote:

"If it aint broke, fix it until it is."

Owners here have their lights on as well and run the aircon/heater/demister fan all the time. Winching everyday is something different and I haven't see the OP mention it yet.
