can anyone tell me what is the differance in the backing plate and drum on the parking brake for years. on most the sites they say that they will fit all years. i have a 3 speed t/c with drum and backing plate and i have a backing plate and drum from a 77 can they interchange

55 parking brake backing plates/cam/lever mechanisms were different than the 40 series, becasue the cable came into the backing plate on the right side instead of the left.

If you have a 40 series backing plate, the cable should enter the backing plate on the lower left side. I have not ever had an issue with interchange on the different years of 40 series backing plates.

Other than the bolt pattern on the drum, there is not a significant difference between them.

edit:

the very early fj40 backing plates have a smaller center hole just like the drum has a smaller seal surface OD. but they're few and far between.

once again, steve is right on the money.

Hi All:

Yes, a "four-speed" t-case p-brake drum will fit onto a "three-speed" t-case.

I'm sure it probably works visa-versa, but I've found that the bolt pattern on the p-brake drum itself is different between the "three-speed" and "four-speed" versions (i.e. the flanges on the drive shafts won't interchange.)

Regards,

Alan

Hey Alan!

You guys are correct, they will interchange, however I found some differences. I removed the 3-speed t-case from my '71 40. I bought a 700R4 that had an AA adapter and a 4-speed t-case attached. I found that the cable end was different from my '71's. I don't think it would have bolted up to the parking brake handle. I swapped the backing plate from my 3 speed case and used the drum from the 4 speed case because I have drive shafts to match it. Everything else about the parking assemblies look the same between them. I had a spare t-case from a 55 and as Poser said the cable was on the right.

Steve
