Hey Guys,
I'm overdue for a rebuild of my stock 1972 FJ40 parking brake. I've done a search on the forum and looked at both my Toyta shop manual and my Haynes manual and can't find anything that will tell me what size socket wrench I need to remove the nut holding the brake assembly on the transmission shaft. I'm going to have to buy a new socket since I don't have one big enough, so I want to be sure to get the right size - can anybody tell me definitively what size socket I'll need to remove the nut?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

27mm I believe. I had to buy 27mm for the Parking Brake nut, 30mm for the x-case front output flange nut. Hope I don't have it backwards

Just went through this yesterday. My '72 was a 29mm. 30 was too big, 27 too small, and I don't have a 28mm. 29mm was just right...

Drum roll please................................
And the answer is: 29mm! Apparently it changes to 27 somewhere along the production line - I did find a reference to the size of the nut in the FAQ under Hardware, Nuts and Bolts and in that thread it shows up as 27mm. For those of us fortunate enough to have a 72, our nuts are bigger. Thanks for the advice DPV7070; given that you had just done yours, I went with your size recommendation. You were right on.

Ahhh fortunate the have big nutts? Haa haa! No pun intended I'm sure, but I have one hell of a gear shift! :) And I suppose 72's have their good points as all earlier truck do.
