I want to repaint a set of stock steel rims. I see CCOT has some grey but I was wondering if anyone has found a color in a spray can that is close to the OEM grey?

Early Ford Tractor is pretty close. That is what I used on my stockers. You can go to any place that sells implement paint, comes in quarts/gallons and spraybombs. I used the catalyst, too.

that looks good ed. also Robert la duke, painted his rims a creamish color and it looks great. ill see if i can dig up a picture :)

Yes, and I've been pretty happy with it except one seam opened up when the stitches came loose. I have a bud with a trim shop who can fix it, but what a PITA for a top less then a year old.:frown:

there were a few different shades over the years, depending on year.
this gray closely matched the color remaining on the inside of mine when i removed the old tires.
these are from a '75.

I painted mine black. I was looking at early(60s) cruiser ads and it seems like the wheels were painted body color or black, so I just went with black. I think they look great.:D

Thanks guys, I new it had been done. Does anybody have a decent set of rims and maybe hubcaps they want to sell? I'm in Georgia. I also have a set of nice FJ62 rims I would be willing to trade.

Even though I think it turned out a little dark, I rocked the spraycan of wheel grey that JT Outfitters. (That and they're pewter spraycan's rock for trim work.)

Sorry no pic's.

I used the duplicolor line. Had them sandblasted and then used rattle-can self-etching primer which worked amazingly well. Topped it off with their Machine Grey acrylic enamel spray can which was basically identical to the stock color. No issues so far.

I would have mine powder coated instead of painting. Any good shop should be able to come up with a color that matches the original paint. Powdercoating is much more durable that straight paint in my opinion.

i was going to PC mine, but
A. they wanted WAY too many clams
B. they had a very limited number of colors, in fact only one gray(that was'nt even close) and those were the only colors they could/would do.
so it was rattle can or nothing for me.

Plus, if they get scratched, or when they get scratched, painted wheels can be touched up. Agreed that PC is more durable and preferred in many cases, but I don't think wheels are one, at least for me. Doug is right that most shops can match anything you bring them.

What would be a fair price for 5 stock rims powdercoated grey?

I was considering eBay...but perhaps I'll start with mudbay first.

I just had some fj60 rims powdercoated white that I decided to use instead of the grey rims.

I have seen them go for $250 and up. If you are looking to get top dollar.....Ebay them.

I bought 5 stock disc wheels for $50, had them sandblasted, add $20 per, plus self-etch primer and finish coat(both i did) I would be losing money at less than $250 for five.

I painted mine with Duplicolor rattle-can bed liner to give them a crinkle finish and to cover up any rough spots. Then I painted over that with a Home Depot brand paint that I thought matched the original color pretty well.
