I originally painted my 40s door hinges with Rust Oleum semi gloss black industrial enamel. I don't like the paint. I want to try Duplicolor's satin black wheel paint and would like to know how much prep I need to do to switch brands and types. Will a light coat of auto primer work? I like the durability of the charcoal Duplicolor I used on our 80 wheels.

That depends upon what type of paint is there, what type of primer you intend on using, and what type of paint you will be finishing with. Not all enamels, laquers, acrylics play well together.

Powder coat them?

Get 100% of the Rustoleum off. I have read on many places there is a chemical in Rustoleum that really messes up other paints and primers put over it.

I totally forgot about powder coat! I'll have to strip off the old paint anyway. I'll reprime them and try the duplicolor for now, but I like that idea. They aren't that bad to remove and install.

They cleaned up nice with the wire wheel and fresh primer. I ordered the new paint at my local Napa. I'll post up a couple pics when they're done.

paint update

So I used the duplicolor satin black wheel paint and love the finish. I think it will be the coating I use on my cage, bumpers, etc.

I used spray can truck bed liner on mine. Turned out great.

Mostly I just like how great they are.

Once I can find all my hinge bolts, I'll put them on...I may have to spring for some new ones.
