2006 LX. I’ve been getting an occasional P0156 the past few months, it always goes away on its own I’m not sure it’s related.

This morning I started to feel the engine running rough. Then a real rough idle and a knocking sound. No CEL. I thought maybe coil pack.

Then slow blinking CEL but no code. Knocking seemed to get worse, engine real rough at idle and under load, better when I let off gas. Blinking CEL would come & go, still no code.

Finally threw a P0606, symptoms continuing. I’m parked now with my three little kids at a swim meet 40 min drive from home. Not far from a toyota dealership but if it’s the computer I’m not sure they can help me.

I can’t find any results for P0606 on mud. Am I safe to drive home? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

What I am reading is that a P0606 code means that your ecu has failed the self check when the ignition is turned on. I would try disconnecting the battery for a while and see if that does anything. And check all ground connections.

Thank you @Mauser ill try disconnecting the battery. And I’ll address the O2 sensor that may be bad. Could be related to the p0156 I’ve had popping up. Maybe it’ll go away.

I’ve been planning to replace my Bank 2 rear sensor to fix the P0156 code. Just reading now it looks like first I should check for vacuum leaks or exposed wire/loose connections. Any thoughts on this?

I usually get the code after climbing a long hill near my house around 50mph. Light comes on just after creating and beginning to descend the other side. Doesn’t feel like intermittent wire issue to be. Maybe vacuum leak?

Check wiring to cam sensor and to crank sensor behind the harmonic balancer.

Thank you @Mauser. I’ll pass that info along. Truck’s on its way to the shop now.

I may be a fool I’ll see how it turns out: I drove home (knocking the whole way) so I could leave my kids. Coolant temp stayed fine throughout the drive at 186-190. Just as I pulled up to my garage at the top of a 1/2 mile pretty steep hill I smelled burning and saw smoke so I just shut it down. Temp was 195 rising to 197 when I shut it off. I don’t think it got too hot but there was definitely wet oil leakage on passenger side of block. Maybe from the coil? It’s under the air box which I haven’t taken off. My guess is #4; that’s where it sounded like the knocking was from and also the first misfire code it threw.

I’m out of my comfort zone so my local shop is having a look at it. They’ve been good to me in the past.

#4 spark plug blew out. Probably had worked loose and that caused the knocking? Then the drive home was too much for it; I think it blew out in my driveway (almost made it). The shop’s going to try a helicoil in the head. Fingers crossed….
