This week more noises from under the hood of my FJ60 seemed to have crept up aside from my usual squeaky belts and alternator chirping. Looks now like the p/s pump pulley when running is very wobbly (bearing shot?) and is making a wild noise at idle and all speeds. I assume it is on its way to failure. I've parked the truck for now.

When I turn the wheel and the pump has to work the noise goes away.

Does this mean my p/s pump needs to be rebuilt or can I have the bearing replaced in the pulley itself? I'm hoping the latter.

I searched on this and didn't come up with anything.

The pully doesn't have any bearings. It's held onto the shaft with a woodruff key. There are bearings inside the pump though, where the shaft enters the PS body.
Is the wobble between the pully and the shaft, or between the shaft and the PS housing? I'm guessing that it's the pully wobbling on the shaft, in which case it could be due to either of two easy things to fix:
- make sure the nut holding the pully onto the shaft is tight.
-make sure the woodruf key isn't mungled up.

If it's the shaft wobbling inside the PS body, then I think you need a new PS pump.

In one case I have replaced a pulley and that fixed a similar problem.

In most cases it is a bad pump. Replace with either new Toyota or a used pump. Aftermarket anything is worthless in this case.

The only way to know is to remove the pulley and inspect the shaft and I.D. of the pulley.

Hmm - my PS just went bad - belt popped off - I put it back on and the noise was horrific. Had to replace the PS pump and the pulley.

I $love$ my 60.

i would replace/fix the problem a.s.a.p. i would fear that the loose pulley is wearing your belt and might fall apart and leave you stranded somewhere.

What was the fix on yours? I'm having a wobbly pulley on the PS pump on my 91 3fe 80 Series.

Thanks.

The pulley is actually on there not very tight so you can physically take the pulley off the pump and then check it to be "true". If it is not then I would replace the pulley. What kind of wobble are you getting?
Also be sure that the nut that holds the pulley on is tight to ensure that it is on all the way.

Thanks. I swapped out a used, but OEM pulley and it's now up and running.

I'd like to swap out the bushing in the failed pulley but I don't know anyone who has done that and Mr. T doesn't sell the bushing.

The failed pulley could be seen and heard to be out of true when running at idle. Above 2,00 rpm it smoothed out. Someone suggested that the belt was WAY too tight. I've always been concerned about that and I don't see that as the problem here.

I'll get a new OEM pulley and some peace of mind.

Thanks again.

Ed
