Herm.... Any possibility camping by water???
Yes. Ash and I were talking about going to a spot near a small stream. It is a bit of a drive and I don't remember how to get there. It will only accommodate 4 (maybe 5) trucks. So it really depends on how many trucks turn up. Just in case, you can camp near my truck - I have a 10 gal water tank that would put you "by water", so to speak.

Is there access to the east fork trail from 48? Might be able to get a little closer and avoid even more goons.

Edit: Map says maybe...

Yes and No... I scouted it for access for search and rescue evacuations from the springs over the course of a couple days about a month ago. It's steep and cliff's out in most sections with no actual trail, but I did find a way down... It's steep and loose but doable.

4B is a short but fun road and has gotten more technical over the past year. I organize a trail race and part of it goes from Jemez Falls to McCauley and we use it for emergency access.

I attached a photo of the cliff side from McCaulley looking up towards where 4B ends on the map @lurch posted. Like I said, there's a way around but it's not a trail; I'd be happy to lead a party down but it's scrambly at best and it earned me some interesting comments and knicknames during last year's trail race.

As far as the road I mentioned before that I was hopeful about on the north end of 10, I checked it out last weekend but there were lots of huge jeep traps.

Great idea! I'm going to check with Todd and see if he's up for it.

McCaulley is a great option for a hike and soak; I'd suggest going in from the Jemez Falls side; there's not as many goons on the hiking trail as there is from Battleship. :) If there's a decent size group interested I could even reserve the picnic gazebo at the falls, just to ensure there is enough parking and a nice end of weekend picnic... It does cost 50.00 but if everyone pitched in a few bucks. Just because parking there and at Battleship can be a bit of a cluster, but if we have a group going, it could be worth it.... plenty parking, covered picnic area, tables, bathrooms for the picnic area users only... Just a thought.

The north end off of FS10 is much quieter than 376 side in my experience... I won't even head towards 126 or 376 on a weekday anymore once Memorial day comes to pass. I found a nice area on a run last weekend and think there's a road to it that is open but not easily found or known... my plan was to check it out this Friday. I'll let you know.

ok - do I have this right? Let me know if those that I have as "tentative" are able to confirm so we can get a good headcount as we approach Saturday.
I am packing the KLR, barring mechanical issues or ridiculous trail challenges I am a go.

Todd and I plan to join for the ride and Saturday and possibly hook up for Sunday. Won't be camping this time, though.

Hey fellow club members,

We are planning a simple overnigher in the Jemez Saturday, June 15th. We realize that the 16th is Father's day. So understand if this may not work for everybody.

Post up if you are interest in joining. This will also be a good chance to try out some of our overlanding projects many of us have been working.

Cheers!
Poupon

Confirmed:
Larry
Frank
Ash
VanMan

Tentative:
Steve
Cheryl
MyNomad
Justin
Bearman

It seems like some of us are going to be heading towards the Jemez after our breakfast. We will circle the wagons at the Daily Grind accordingly.

For those not joining us for breakfast or wanting to meet up later, we will be monitoring 146.400 and also monitoring our mobiles. If possible, we may be able to view/update this thread as well.

Do you know what general area you’re planning on heading to? I'd like to make it, but I don’t think I can leave as early as you guys

Good question. We are planning to confirm during breakfast tomorrow. One of us will post up on this thread before we get out of cell range. Do you have a high powered HAM that you might use once you get close to our prevailing location?

I do not... only have a baofeng at the moment. If there’s no good way to do it not a huge deal
Yeah, the handhelds will work good in close range on simplex, but not sure if they can connect to the megalink. I will share my location via google maps, but would need your (and anybody else interested) mobile phone to do that. Of course, updates on actual location would be subject to connection to the network. So not as reliable as one my desire.

If location sharing is of interest, just PM me with your mobile.

@demoj might have his SPOT going and sending location. That should possibly get people close enough to reach us on ham

Edit: Speaking of the devil, Just talked to him on the phone and hes planning to run his SPOT. He’ll post her once he gets a chance....

I’ll plan to leave directly from breakfast!

What is a SPOT? Sounds interesting. How does it work and how would others see the location with this technology? Thanks Steve.

It's the same general idea as my Garmin inReach … but the inReach is better. :bounce: My inReach drops a track point every 10 minutes and allows me to send text messages to email addresses or phones. It's all done over satellite. This is the track of our AZBDR. If you knew the magic words you could click on the dots as they were getting dropped and it would tell you location, speed, and direction.

I'm to the point where I never adventure off grid without it. It's not cheap, but worth the peace-of-mind. It also keeps family from freaking out when I travel solo.
