New guy working on a 1989 FJ62, 3FE engine. Just finish deep maintenance on LC that sat for 1 year. (Oil, air filter, plugs/wires, fuel, thermostat, water flush of coolant). Looking for some tips.
* How do I ensure the coolant system is full?
* What is the suggested method to fill coolant system?
* If system is full and the engine still overheats at dead stop/idle, what is the likely culprit?

1. Fill at the radiator fill spout until you can’t add any more.
2. Run engine and add more until you can’t add any more. Squeeze radiator inlet hose several times.
3. Drive car.
4. Top off radiator overflow tank to the full line after shutting down the hot engine.

Draining & refilling coolant creates air pockets in the head that take time to purge. Keep an eye on the overflow tank every morning before starting the engine. The coolant level should be at the Low mark.

If you fill the overflow tank to the top when it’s cold, it’ll overflow when the engine heats up cuz the coolant expands when heated.

Most 2F and 3F-E engines show a hot temperature gauge after replacing coolant. Usually it figures itself out (by purging bubbles) after a week or two of daily driving
 
Sometimes when the gas tank is full on a 62 the temp gauge will spike. I believe this is because they share the same ground or something like that. So first make sure its actually overheating. If it is in fact over heating, try to park a little up hill and run the truck with a funnel of coolant in the radiator fill. You should see bubbles coming up, keep adding coolant until the bubbles stop. After that, cap radiator and fill overflow bottle to full mark. Try that and report back if you're still having issues.
