So ......I'll be making time to swap out the fan clutch. Any tests to see if that's the true source of the problem - or is it self evident???

I just rolled up a towel and held the end to rub against the edge of the moving fan blade. It the fan clutch is bad, it won't take much pressure from the towel to bring it to a stop. With your mileage, I'd be very suprised if your fan clutch still works. I replaced mine at about 85k.
