I have a bj74 and what a night. I was driving around with the family with the top off and put on the heat to keep the kids warm. I noticed it went from warm to cold and noticed my guage went to over heat so I went into a gas station and filled up with more water. Now I tried to limp home and my heater temp was super hot and guage showed low. How odd. I made it home and then the engine would not shut off and I could not find the emergency shut off on the engine. So I had to spin off the fuel filter to kill it. What a mess.
I tried to find pictures on it but I couldn't, I think I will take a photo of it and post it for future reference. And it is an auto so I could not stalled it. I pulled the thermostat and it was almost snapped in half. I hope I can throw in a new one and every thing will be fine. I never had a problem with the vsv and I do not know how overheating could have caused that. I hope I did not do any engine or turbo damage.
To top off the horrible evening, some one stole my 24 to 12 volt adapter out of my glove box. They did not take anything else. It was a Jdm unit and it is no use to any other vehicle. I thought it would be a crackhead that took it blindly not knowing what it is but he left the change and four new jerry cans that was in clear sight and left the teresen gas van with all the tools alone. Sound like a fellow truck owner. So if any body out there in vancouver IH8mud land took it and has any morals left, could you throw it back in the truck please. What a day

Sorry I can't help on this.

I can imagen that you are frustrated.

Hope the overheating thing is gone now you've found the broken thermostat.
What was the reason you could not shut off the engine?

Something does not smell right. A broken tstat should lead to a too cool running condition, not a hot running engine.

unless it jambed shut and not open...

i am curious as to why it wouldn;t shut down...did it boil over?

Yeah, I am with you on that, but he said that it was broken nearly in half and his heater was blowing hot. This leads to me to the suspicion that there was not enough coolant present. The lack of coolant could be a result of a cracked head or blown head gasket.

Karl

okay, here is my understanding:
when the heater is blowing hot the water is circulating, when blowing cold or cool water flow is restricted but the guage reads normal...of course when there is low coolant then it blows cold and the temp guage goes dead cold...
if it is blowing super hot then the water is flowing but not fast enough to cool properly...
no?

sorry to hear the theft and the overheating,

Thats my understanding too, but I once had the experience of overheating due to an air bubble in the head and of course low coolant level. What stopped me from correctly identifying the problem was that the heater was blowing hot. To be fair I should not paint everything with the same brush - the problem here could be much different.

so I pulled the thermostat and i will take a picture of it. It was pretty bad, one half was broken off and the plunger was cracked in half. I have never seen such a faulty stat. There seems to be a pinhole leak on the top of the rad. I am not sure if I should repair it or replace it. the engine seems to be ok and now turns off on its own. The stat from a Bj70 does work but is not identical as it will take a little longer to heat up. Mustang connection appears to be a good source for new parts from japan and he has the actual jdm stat in stock for the same price as a toyota dealer. If I could only get my 24 to 12v reducer back. If you haven't found your emergecny shut off then find it, you never know when you will need it.
