I think I might have come up with a way to delete the dvd player and add a bit of organization to the back while camping. Parts are just coming in so it may not work out how I hope. Either way, I thought I’d share as others might find it helpful.

My initial plan is to make a 10 inch by 15 inch cover plate out of .050” aluminum. I purchased a sun visor molle panel that I will install to the plate with some spacers in between the two. I’ve also purchased a cheap LED dome light assembly because I’m too cheap to spend $50 on an OEM unit for the initial trial run.

To get started, can anyone confirm if the white plug with the thin clear wires is the OEM dome light connector? The plug looks right but I’ve never seen wires like that from the factory.

Dude I want to do the same thing. What brand is the dvd player you have?

Just a big dome light would be nice.

It is the Audiovox unit. VOD705 or something like that.

This thread is worth a read, including discussion about the plugs:

Thanks, that helps with the plug identifications.

I wasn't able to install anything as the paint on the new base plate wasn't drying quick enough. I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Otherwise, I got the wiring sorted and the dome light works as it should.

I was able to get everything assembled and installed this morning. It still needs some fine tuning but I’m happy with the progress.

I decided to use the dvd player mount plate to add some extra rigidity to the assembly. I flattened out the side tabs on the mount plate to try and get everything to sit tight against the headliner. It obviously needs more work.

The front edge is not nearly tight enough to the headliner as I’d like. I’ll drop everything down and see where I can improve the fit.

The dome light works great but isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing. Considering it cost under $9, I’ll live with it for now.

I’d like to see the molle panel be a bit wider to fill up the base plate so I’ll have to shop around to see what I can find. I’m trying to keep this at a reasonable cost so hopefully I can find something under $50.

You can get an idea on what I did with the pictures.

Due to hole alignment, I found it easier to install a long screw through the base plate with one nut. This creates a “stud” and the nut holds the molle panel away from the base plate. It makes installation a bit easier if the base plate is installed first then the molle panel goes on.
