I recently went to Big Bend in the heat of the summer and was amazed at the temperatures I saw in the desert. I had a thermometer with me (meat thermometer.....don't ask) but when I stopped I would carry it outside and it would register the same as the truck was registering

Where is that sensor on these trucks?

I have a 1998 ......

I think it's IAT (Intake Air Temperature)

I've been to Bibe in the summer more times than I can remember. I've never seen the thermometer read that high unless the vehicle has just been started.

OAT sensor, iirc, is behind the grill.

Its, IMHO, a stupid location for ambient temp sensor. Generally if < ~20mph, all things trail work, the temp skews high (due to engine heat pushing on it)...pointless. Some 80-Series guys relocate the sensor to the interior of the snorkel...if so equipped, then no hot engine impart ;)

I honestly never thought much about it until I went to Big Bend alone in July.

I started watching it like a hawk. I thought it was the black ball on the dash but I ruled that out
One of the dash sensors sees light or darkness and works with the automatic headlight system. The other senses temp and works with the heater/ac systems.
