I myself would add sliders too, but for most people, the ground clearance with 33" + torsion bar crank is more than enough.
Seems like he got his priority straight with a limited budget. I had a similar roof rack as his, started rusting after a couple of rain storm. If I can go back, I would invest in a cargo box, I prefer to protect all my belongings in an enclosed box. Sure it might not as cool, but way more functional.
