I need a set of temporary spare shocks for a few weeks while I ship out the Icon shocks for rebuilds. They came on the truck when I purchased it so I don't have a backup set and would prefer to not have the truck down for that long. I have read through several threads and see conflicting answers. If I order a set of factory shocks do they come with all the necessary bushings, washers, etc?

Nope, just the shocks, they are very inexpensive for what they are. Bushings and washers and nuts when adding all up will probably cost more than the shock itself.

They definitely come with all the hardware, except for when they don't, in which case they don't come with any of the hardware. So there's something fishy going on, either there is some variation in the way that people are ordering them or they are coming from two different OE suppliers and Toyota is asleep at the wheel.

You may be just the guy to get to the bottom of this. I'd go into the dealer and point at the parts diagram showing all the hardware included in the box with the part number and tell them you want exactly what's in the picture, and if you don't get exactly what's in the picture you're going to return them. And if that doesn't work you could always order some Gabriel Ultras on Rock Auto. Surely they'll last a few weeks.

How much did you guys pay to have all the bushings? When i bought mine they were $40 a piece, and i only got the bare shock

I ordered a full set of OEM shocks a few years ago + 1 rear shock a couple of weeks ago (I broke it) from McGeorge. They all came with the required bushings and nut but not the large cupped washers. All shocks were under $40/ea.

I got a quote from CamelBack Toyota last week for 319.38. That price includes all 4 shocks, and all new necessary hardware.
Yea, that reflects the cost of the super expensive washers. The shocks themselves are fairly cheap.

Here's a breakdown for my '98 LC. I bought all parts online, a mixture of domestic & Partsouq:

Front shocks (48511-69585): $64.12 for both, domestic
Rear shocks (48531-69835): $75.40 for both, domestic
Front washers (4x flat: 90948-02174, 2x upper flanged: 90948-02175, 2x lower flanged: 90948-02176): $40.78 for all via Partsouq
Rear washers (6x flat 90948-02173, 2x flanged 90948-02170): $36.48 for all via Partsouq

$216.78 total, not including shipping

If I put it all in a Partsouq cart right now it totals $427 with shipping. The shocks are heavy, source them locally.

Washers only from Partsouq are $113 with shipping.

FYI, flanged washers are necessary to keep the shock shafts from rattling in the frame mounts. Not sure why the front uses separate upper & lower, but that's how it is. All washers are necessary to take up stack height so the top nuts can compress the rubber mounting bushings correctly. I.e. bushings do NOT sit directly against the frame mounts.

BTW, you may already have the washers. The problem arises when a PO replaces the OEM shocks with aftermarket ones that have a smaller shaft diameter,. They use the included hardware, and toss out the solid gold OEM washers. Now you're going back to OEM and your current washers won't fit over the larger OEM shaft. Check what you got now, measure the shaft diameter if you can.

Also, Toyota parts diagram (for my '98 LC) shows only shock, bushings, and top nut included with "Absorber Assembly". And this is just how I received mine in a sealed bag.

Is there any reason to replace the retaining washers, i reused mine. It's just a thick washer for holding the bushing in place.
Re-use 'em if you got 'em!
