I am about 2 months in and just got my Old Man lift done....raised it a little over 2" and I am very happy. Steering play greatly improved and the ride is 100% better. I discovered I have some play in one of my tie rods so ordering a new stet and replacing all 4. On the major list is a possible desmog and an H55 conversion. In the mean time, I am thinking about exhaust. The muffler has holes in the bottom. I am in Texas so I have lots of options and could go all the way to just removing the Cat and muffler altogether. Wondering what others have done that have the same options......

Been asked a few time, think there is even a thread out there with muffler sound snippets.

Basically, from what I remember, CAT removal adds a little HP but nothing substantial. The exhaust smell that is apparent after such removal many have decided is not worth the actual removal.

Stock replacement from Walker is still available in sections from RockAuto.com so you could keep completely stock. For me, I went with something that sounded a bit meatier and upped from 2" to 2.5" from the CAT back. If you have a welder this is something you can do on your own and I thought was a fun project.
Just my $0.02

A carbureted engine with no catalytic converter has an exhaust smell similar to an old lawn mower. If you've got an attached garage - forget it.

Should do 2.5" straight back and add a magnaflow or borla muffler.

And so i did.
Home made for stainless I/O tubing.
Quiet most times but does have bark when in it

I’ve got an 83 FJ60 and deleted the catalytic converter. To me, it was a very noticeable difference in the 2300-2900RPM range. It was no longer a flat spot in the power band. It now pulls all the way through. I used the Manafree CC delete pipe so that I could add it back later easily if I wanted. For the muffler, I went with a Flow master 40 series. It’s got a nice sound that doesn’t overly drone(sp?) at highway speeds.

The exhaust smell is a little stronger, but I like that kind of thing. Reminds me of helping my grandfather on the farm years ago. Same old farm truck smell. It’s great. If only they made a cologne with that smell haha.

I just did a Man-a-Fre straight pipe (cat delete) and 2.5" catback that came with an X-lerator muffler...
I also experienced better performance up at 2600-3000 rpm and I think it sounds good but some might
think it's a bit loud once on the skinny pedal.

x2

I did the same thing. Removed cat and also installed a new header. Power is noticeably better and the sound is good.
