hey guys,

one more question for you all, thanks for your responses as always...

I just put in new NGK 1229 10.5 V plugs and realized i had no idea how long to hold my button for...

I tend maybe to be a little heavy-thumbed as i think i blew out my last set of 6 v 's holding it too long in the winter...

so just in general how long should i be holding it to start in the morning? with the 10.5 from reading on here after i hold it for awhile and get the engine going i can glow them more without risk of burning them out?

THanks all!

Dan

On my BJ74 the glow plugs time out after 14 seconds. Iwould think in Vancouver your would not need a long glow.

sorry guys, should have said i have a bj70 with a 3B.

mornings here arent cold, but the first morning start ups have been bad for awhile.

the new NGK plugs are shorter than the toyota ones i had i took out , but was told this wasnt an issue. way more threads on these too, but just did them as tight as i could by hand and gave them a few more turns with a wrench, that sound about right?

held it for 10 seconds after work today and it still took a good while to start up....longer than that should i be worried about burning them out?

How much difference in length. The further they protrude ,the more fuel they must heat:confused:

What colour smoke are getting?

The new plugs are about a quarter inch shorter i'd guess off the top of my head...

blue-ish smoke...not a ton more than ever, and the rest of the day is fine, just first start generally. was doing it with the 6v's too for the last little bit, but for the first few months with the 6's while my timer was working it was starting better than ever.

Dunno much about electrics but maybe the new plugs take a lot longer to get hot .

I have a similar problem. My 1HZ in the 73 series takes 10 seconds to glow with a manual switch and aftermarket glow plugs ,HKT I think.

My 75 series with 200000 klms old factory glowplugs and factory glowplug relay takes 3 seconds in any weather:confused:

Probably should get BIG BAD BEAR to put this on the diesel forum:D

the ones you hold for 10 seconds...are they 6v or 10.5?

hoping i can hold my 10.5's that long without damage...

It says for a 12v system with a 11V plug.
