I'm about to order a suspension kit for my 71, but I'm still on the fence about which shocks to order.

OME says that for my 71 the shocks are (heavy load):
-Fronts: n106
-Rears: n75

But some people I know from local 4x4 shops say that the shocks OME recomends are too short and they limit the suspension travel, that they recomend them due to liability reasons because a spring could potentially come out due to the suspension travel but that this is very rare. They adviced me to go with the fallowing which are the same shocks but a bit longer:
-Front: N73
-Rear: n75e.

Any thoughts?

Its really annoying when they cant get their act together.
On one hand the manufacturer should know what shock is best through extensive testing.
On the other hand the shop has local experience.

I would go with what the shop says ,a bit more length cant hurt.
Will the longer shocks cost more?

I'm waiting for the quote because I will order them from a store in Miami, they should cost the same though.

the word I have from ARB is that the springs are meant to be loaded - then you get shock travel. If you order heavy duty springs that are meant to carry 450kgs or whatever - then you need to have 450 kgs loaded in the truck. If you put the heavy springs on and have no load then they will sit very high, the shocks will be at full extension.

I have installed many OME kits and they are all like that ie. the shocks are at full extension with no load. if you manufacture it so the spring is lighter then when you load it up it will bottom out.

I think for the company to tell you there is a liability issue then that is pretty weird seeing as how that is what ARB/OME recommends - if you use something they don't recommend then that is where the liability comes into play.
Just my opinion.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote Ishobie, what they said was that OME went with the shorter shocks because the longer ones would allow more suspension travel and could potentially cause one of the front springs to fall out, which would make OME liable, so they play it safe and recomend shorter shocks.

maybe he thinks your running leafs at the front :hhmm:

Ah, I see, sorry I though you had leafs at the front:(

My front OME coils sagged after just a few months - so I had to put 2 inch coil spacers in. They are OME heavies.

All in all I don't like the OME and will try something else when I decide to change them out. I had to remove 2 leafs from the back and now I am looking for longer travel shocks as well.

A mate of mine runs the king springs in his 80 series and 105 series and finds them very comfy and no sag he's very happy with them

I was going to go with Kings next - anyone hear anything good about tough dogs?

The same mate that runs the 4" king springs in his 80s and 105 has the tough dog adjustables and they are a awsum shock and changing the setting actually works another mate has the tough dogs in his hzj79 with 2" spings both ride really good

(at a 4x4 shop in perth there is a tough dog cut open next to a rancho and the tough dog shaft thing is twice the size)

Would you say that the 2" KS springs really give a 2" lift or is it higher? I'm still unsure if I should go with 2" and maybe add a spacer to reach 3"ish or if I should go with the 4".

I hjust got an ARB bullbar and will eventually add a winch, so I don't know if the 4" will be more like 3-3.5" because of the weight. I'm aiming for 3" but I wouldn't mind if it stays within the 2.5-3.5" range.

Ive heard that aftermarkt 2" lift springs arnt any taller just stronger or something so they dont sag and hold there height

The Dobinsons I put on my 73 series gave me a minimum of 2.5" and have not moved.

I was think of coils for his 74 leafs do seem to hold height better

I have another question for you guys, do you change the panhard rod when you lift your 70s (with front coils) or is that only required for big lifts? people around here don't give it a second thought, but I would like to know what you people in OZland do.

You dont ever really see mega lifts on DD 79 series etc usually because as soon as you do the huge lift you get a yellow sticker from the police which means taking it for a road worthy inspection or they wont let you drive it if its considered dangerous

This bloke has a adjustbl pangard rod:D Im not sure how this bloke got away with it but it looks a bit over the top i think . because he didnt move the coil base in on his 105 series rear diff the coils sat under the chassis which would be a 4" lift in itsself so to compensate for the front it got a 8 " lift
