Rough few days sine the ER visit for Maple. Change of meds and FHO surgery scheduled for Monday. Working with Carolina Veterinary Specialists at their ER Sat morning and will be going down to CLT today for a further evaluation. I want to see what the chances for a total hip replacement are and what the costs will be.

Caroina Vet Specialists (at least the one in Matthews) is one of the best vets I've had to go to on a regular basis.... hoping for the best for you all.

Good luck!

The problem with the dragging left leg is evidently neurological. Went to the Matthews office and they confirmed. Rather than do the 180 mile round trip tomorrow for further testing, they have referred me to their W-S office and we go there tomorrow at 9:30. FHO surgery will be postponed until we can get the left leg functioning again. Thanks everyone!

Good Luck, David.

Our previous lab had what seemed to be a similar issue. She just out of the blue had trouble with her back half. We did numerous vet visits, X-rays, etc. nothing came back conclusive, so they assumed neurological. Luckily, she got better on her own over the next few months. She still had trouble knowing if her rear feet were paw pad down or up, just like she had no feeling, but seemed happy and got around pretty good.

What an eventful past 6 days. I have spent over $1000 on the dog, have been to 5 vet appointments, driven over 300 miles and I still don't know what is wrong with her. But I did find out a doggy CT scan is $1500 and an MRI is $2500. If she has a slipped disc the surgical cost can skyrocket to $7000. I am in the wrong business.

I hear you. We had a similar scenario but ours wasn't well enough to make it through the surgery.

Have you been to NC State? The organization that I used to train dogs for uses them for out of the norm care and odd dianosis.

Her right knee surgery was at NCSU. Good people but again extremely expensive. The right knee was $3000. The hip replacement was going to be $7000. CVS was going to do both for $7000 at one time. I declined, to much surgery at one time and the recovery would have been tough.

EDIT - I am going to keep her quiet for the next four weeks and give her the anti inflammation drugs she was given to see if any improvement is seen. If not, my son offered to make her a titanium wheel chair like he made for his Corgi several years ago.

Terriorist! That frog toy has an automated frog noise, complete with speaker of some sort. If you squeeze it, or in this case push down on it with your paw it "ribbets" 3 times. Sam has it down to a science. Most times amusing, 2:43 AM, not so much :)

Sorry to hear about some of the troubles and challenges some here are having. I can empathize, we had a ~$4K emergency with our Swissy not too long ago. We were lucky and things are back to normal for now. Expensive furry companions but cannot imagine life without them. Good luck to all going through tough times right now.

As suddenly as the paralysis started last Sunday, it appears to be abating just as quickly as of yesterday, Friday. To my amazement, Maple started to walk around again on her own with no help from me. Since yesterday she has been getting stronger and can now walk down the deck steps but i still help her back up but still a little gimpy on a flat surface. She is acting better, eating and drinking better and moving around the house whenever she wants to. I am amazed.

Same thing with our previous lab...we eventually stopped trying to figure it out. Was making us crazy!

I had a Lab that also came up lame in the hindquarters, not once but twice over a period of time. I eventually figured it out, he was chewing on a piece of pressure treated wood he stole out of my shop without me knowing about it. His Vet confirmed it was the culprit and the paralysis passed quickly the next day.

Went to meet the newest member of our family last night. His final 8 week vet check is tomorrow morning and we go pick him up tomorrow afternoon.

He's an Imperial Shih Tzu which will put him between 8-12 lbs full grown. Probably slightly smaller than our other dog.

He was super chill - which of course means he'll be all over the place crazy when we bring him home. We named him Loki - the double meaning of him being "low key"... We'll see if that turns out to be true :)
