Something else you can do is to section your welds, and use some naval jelly to discolor the weld metal vs the base material. Just cut-apply naval jelly-wait-rinse off w/water.

So you can see the weld fusion profile: I cut the spray/short fillet above and set camera to 'macro' mode.



wow, don't know much about welding but that looks like a beautiful weld...
 
I work alone and have never had time for formal welding classes. I have learned a lot, I think, from reading threads like this as well as posting pictures of welds and gathering opinions.

But, of all the background information, terminology, and techniques...I have learned the most from just reading a few books on welding. This is not mentioned very often but for $2.35 in over due fines at the local library...much can be learned. I own Galvery's book called Welding Essentials, and have used it often. All major welding techniques are reviewed, including detailed diagrams for positioning.
