I changed out the diaphram in my 3B injection pump today. that's no easy job for someone with large hands. it is on a stand. i don't think i could have done it on an installed engine. in the bottom of the pump housing just below the rod that diaphram attaches to, there was about two tablespoons of crankcase oil. should that be there. it was real black just like oil in crankcase oil filter. i wiped it clean before i installed diaphram. anything i should check out?

That is a fun task, I did mine while the engine is in the truck and that stupid little nut and pin are a PIA. On some of the engines you will find oil in the fuel pump. It is connected to the engine and the oil will not hurt it as long as there isn't too much. If you look to the left of what you have in the picture you will see, on the side, a small bolt. That bolt is a drain access so you can get the oil out. If is recommended to do that every time you change the oil. If nothing comes out you can do it every second or third time. There is a seal in there somewhere that is leaking a bit of engine oil in but unless you are rebuilding the entire thing, there is no point. When installing a new diaphram they actually recommend that you lubricate it with some mineral oil or something of the sorts so that it does not dry out the leather.

do you lubricate the front, rear or both on the diaphram?
