Oil in coolant
Hey I've got a HJ61 Cruiser with 12h-t factory turbo engine. I checked the coolant the other day and radiator had oil in it. Drained cooling system and there was about 1L of oil all up. Never overheated or anything. Does anyone have any ideas before i start pulling the head off? oh and the turbo was reconditioned about 5 months ago...
Cheers, Tim

I don't have 12HT, but maybe a oil cooler leak?

Yes, I would check that before pulling the head. I've heard of that happening in the TD4.2 when the coolant is allowed to go a long time without changing or when you got a stray current going through the block. If you aren't getting the sweet coolant smell out the exhaust with clouds of vapor, it is likely that it is not the head. If the turbo is water and oil cooled, I would also check there. I can't remember if the 12HT turbo is both oil lubed and water cooled.

It is oil and water cooled, its also very unlikely that is your problem point. The water and oil systems in a turbo are completely different systems separated by a good amount of cast steel. It would be doing all kinds of crazy things if the CHRA cracked enough for that to happen.

The Oil cooler is a good starting point.

Was it engine oil or trans fluid (sorry did not see if it was 5spd or auto). If it was ATF look at the cooler in the bottom tank of the rad.

It's 5 speed manual. Cheers for the info will take a look at the oil cooler next weekend!

I believe you can also buy "sniffer" kits that can check if you have exhaust gases in your coolant. You know, rather than shoving your face in your exhaust and huffing exhaust :D
